Tell me about your guitar playing or practice habits

If I'm looking at a guitar I'm interested in buying and I hear "ooh that's beautiful" or "that's colours amazing" then I know I'm good to go ahead and get it.
I just figured this one out about my wife!

I practice about an hour a day every other day these days. Some scales, some songs. I have a metronome and a looper pedal if any ideas need jotting down. Then they live on the looper for a while to see if they hold up when presented to other musicians during jams. If they continue to please me (the tracks NOT the musicians), I'll start a proper multitrack. I've been recording for about as long as I've been playing. I've got a minimal system these days but I can still make it happen. I'd like to start recording drums/bands again. I really miss playing drums. Perhaps if I can find them in a nice color! :ROFLMAO:

I haven't "practiced" in so long I probably don't even remember how to play power chords in dropped-D tuning.

I bought a fancy analog metronome last year thinking I would actually start practicing properly more often but it's just become a decoration on my amps that have become furniture.

These days my extent of playing guitar is basically:

Plug in pedal
Swap input/output cables to the correct order
Jam out to the "All right now" verse for a few minutes
Play the same old tired lead "riffs" for a few minutes
Unplug pedal

I haven't even picked up a guitar in a year or two unless I'm sitting at my workbench.

Probably 10-20 minutes most days. Usually just improvising. Sometimes learning a part. My son loves to ask me for stuff right when he hears my amp turn up.

I also sometimes practice in my head when I’m on a walk, not paying attention to a conversation, or just staring at a wall. I jam with some buddies once a month.

I hear a song while driving and think "I need to learn that".

At next traffic light, I google it on phone to remember

I get home and look at phone and remember, then pull up tab and try it for 5-10 mins and then almost never play it again.

Repeat every 1-5 years

Honestly - I try and practice - as in actively getting better on song(s) and far more rarely theory / scales ~ an hour a day...

... it's working a little...

... I wish it was working more...

I like to play 4 to 6 hours at a time, and usually that's Friday or Saturday night. I have about 100 songs I have written up in with just chords and words, so I play and sing. Sometimes with mic and electric, sometimes just with acoustic. Here's a couple examples of how I lay it out, note the very compressed notation used for chords. So simple and yet accurate....

I don't use any metronome, instead I dance to and fro as I'm playing and keep time with my body instead of foot. Most musicians that I've had the pleasure of playing music with complement me on my excellent timing..... after 57 years of playing it just becomes a part of you. I don't try to play music, I BECOME the music.

I fully understand dancing to the music.
I use a drum machine, the Korg Volca Beats, sometimes to practice. I hate the sound of a metronome; a basic drum machine beat is more appealing. And I always stand up to practice. So dancing and swaying and foot tapping are all happening.
I try to play once a day. At least an hour. But hopefully 2 or more. I love to lose track of time when I play, but not my timing. Haha.
The most important aspect of practicing for me has been STRETCHING my hands, fingers, and wrists, before picking up the guitar. A few years back I strained the facial tissue on my forearms. Repetitive over use, at work and at home. Too much heavy hands on work at the job site, and too much guitar play, without concern for proper posture, and technique. The tissue around the muscle, that holds the muscle to the bone was causing me pain and numbness in my hands. I stopped doing a many things with my arms and hands as I could. To give them time to recover. I even stopped cooking, to avoid cutting veggies and scrubbing dishes.
Anyway. After 3 months of recovery, I now stretch, and do a few licks and scales to warm up before diving right in.
I play songs from start to finish, not just the riff. I sing with or without a mic, but try to use the mic.
I use an EHX 360 looper to extend a 3 minute song into a 10 minute song. To practice soloing/noodling. And to store a new riff idea, that I will revisit with fresh ears.
I started playing when I was 16. I’m 43 now. And most of my growth as a player has happened over the last 12 years. I also feel obligated to add that I don’t have kids. So 2 hours a day isn’t a problem most days.
Anyway. The big take away is STRETCH before you play. Trust me. It takes 3 mins.

I thought of two other practice habits I have. When learning a song, I will write the lyrics down. I won’t print them off the computer. Writing them down on paper helps me memorize the song.
And I will often record my practice on my phone. So I can have a listen later on. And see what was good or bad.
