This Gibson sounds like SHIT!

Pretty good. His thumb is a little heavy…I have the same issue when I play (try to) Chet Atkins arrangements. I’ve always said that the only time the bridge pickup on an archtop should be used is when it’s played with the neck pickup…

100% agreed, I never use the neck by itself. I'll use bridge by itself or bridge and neck, but neck by itself just doesn't do it.

I should caveat that I'm a garbage guitarist, but still.

I love that a guy is playing Chet on an archtop with a bunch of Orange amps in the background lol. Play some Boris next!

I consider the middle position on a two humbucker guitar is kind of a secret weapon. If I'm playing my SG or Les Paul clean I'm probably in that middle switch position. The two pickups in parallel get a single coil-ish type of tone. I know it's not like identical, but it's as close as you're getting without coil splitting or tapping.

95% of the classic Jimmy Page tone is both pickups on, with the neck volume rolled backed just a hair. Makes the tone sweet and smooth…

I'm no Jimmy Page, but my old Les Paul was coil split and I would run in the middle position with the bridge as a humbucker and the neck split, gave some very sweet tones.

I think the brittleness came from the recording device. It's kinda hard to get an L5 to sound brittle! I think it would have sounded better on a Gretsch, whether with Dearmonds or Filter'trons. Never been a fan of bridge HBs played clean, but a Gretsch in the bridge position can be a beautiful thing. Especially with just a hair of dirt.

For me the L5 is all about the neck pickup. But I actually prefer my ES-225 with it's dog-ear P90s anyway.

That fella sure can play. I'm more of a Scotty style player than a Chet player. Can't use a thumb pick. I play pick and fingers style so I don't know why I keep my thumb nail long...
