I do the snakes as well. I’ve found that the most common mistake is using too much. Very little will do the trick. Also don’t try pulling it off while things are still hot. Pulls off much better when cooled down and then roll it in to a blunt point and use it to blot up any remaining bits. It picks itself back up pretty well.
In addition to this method, I also stick the putty to the top of components and then use a scrap piece of paper or something to create a flat surface so that the putty isn't getting into the leads. Picture if that doesn’t make any sense - this board is done but imagine I was soldering the 100uf cap.
For resistors and diodes I'll put some putty on the corner edges of the board and use that to keep the board flattened in place. I worship this shit
