What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Notorious for it! I remember when I gave my old 74 Vibrolux it’s 30yr PM. Recapped it, replaced all noisy carbon comps, cut out the nasty CBS Hf suppressors, and switched it from a balance to proper bias.
After all that it still had a bad hum and other noises everywhere. I ended up cleaning up the wiring and pulled enough slack wire out of it to actually wire up another amp. Amp was so quiet after that you couldn’t tell it was on until you played.
Its on my list. Probably do a huge over haul, nice thing about it not being super collectible. I dont feel bad butchering it. These arent the most popular amps in the world due to the UL etc but i am a fan of it. The low power mode is great, its quieter than you’d expect….

IMHO, any maintenance (replacing carbon comps, e-caps etc), is NEVER butchering it… and if you mod, and it’s easily reversible, it’s also not a bad thing.

Its crossed my mind using whats here and converting it to a super reverb type circuit. Would likely need to change out the eyelet, i would need to do some research but i think i could convert it to a super without any new holes, i may just do a singke channel though. We’ll see in a month i might also decide to just sell it and get something else. Im an amp whore

Have been working on a design to use these Toshiba 2SA478’s I found in Akhibara Tokyo. Have tested half the pack and only 1 so far tested bad. Think I finally have the basic circuit down, just need to work on the tone control and some voicing. I wanted a high gain fuzz using as much germanium (and only germanium) as I could get away with. I currently have this circuit stacked with 5 of these PNP Ge Toshibas (4 in the main circuit path, and 1 as a diode). Gain and sustain for days and minimal noise especially for being on a old RadioShack breadboard.

There will be more features in this pedal than just the fuzz. Introducing Fuzzilla vs Akhibara!!!

@Robert how does this make you feel? 😂

Reminds me of the "good old days" of TV/VCR repair.

We didn't have a lift or loading dock so when the big old 60" rear projection televisions came to the back door we had to bear hug them and grab them off the truck... Aside from being heavy as hell, dogs really love soaking the front speaker grille with pee...

Those transistors look like the sound good😊
I didn't want to socket them on this board, but I remembered a 2-transistor fuzz proto/perf board which was still wired up, so testbed time.

I went through the regular customers and wasn't satisfied, so I started chucking whatever I had in the gain range at it. Ended up with a Motorola 3904 and μ electronics 3565 for Q1 and Q2 respectively.
