What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Oh, do NOT buy a fly-by-night sustainer. I bought on Reverb.

I didn't really want to slam a name but after everything about the transaction and the absolute garbage nature of what is sold for around 150$, well... AVOID VEYZ SUSTAINER.

They are now gone from Reverb, sure to return with a new name. I ended up with a full refund plus $50, the seller was that obnoxious.
( I notice that their eBay presence is now down to few dozen listing from hundreds )

This transcends cheap. I oughta know, I love cheap. That's not potting it is hot glue and packing foam.

The other " pole" was empty save for a bit of flip flop foam.

Yesterday I finally finished Brutalist Jr as it was sitting on my table for few days as I couldn’t figure why output is barely hearable.

I troubleshooted measuring voltages and contiunity, reflowed most of the circuit, changed pots and bend IC legs for better socket contact. No luck until last evening, when missed problem occured to me at last. I had misplaced both legs of a 220nf cap one row too high on my veroboard! I felt dumb about the lack of perception, but little satisfied as the pedal started to work as it should.

Had quick test on home amp and I start to think all gainy pedals sound bit same on front of Peavey transtube circuit, how so? :ROFLMAO: Honestly I’ll do real judging after blasting the real deal with Brutalist on next rehearsal. /,,/

New onboard preamp for a former NAMM bass that the former owner decided to make passive-only, a pretty daft thing since it has low-ish impedance pickups and no native low end to speak of:

Format this time is going to be active bass and mids, w/passive tone control. I've done quite a few that way for this luthier and it's his favorite for most of his builds.

But does it work?

RAT clone with liquid crystal light valves used for a fancier indicator. There are 3 (one per letter) which open or close when engaged, controlled by a microcontroller inside. The letters aren't lit up, the light valves just open to reveal a reflective red material underneath. I'm not sure if this is the exact type, but using something like this:

Affixing some guides to make laser action less of an annoyance.

Camera distortion notwithstanding, I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Measuring with some calipers, it's dead on. 10mm from the borders.

I got real worried when I put a different lid on the work area. Thought my carpenter square was bad. Turns out the lid was just a piece of junk and not square at all…. This red one fit just right, and the results speak for themselves.

This is exactly what I need to make myself. Too many enclosures ending up for personal use only lately 😂

Three gaffes this week.

First: I got some cheapo bare enclosures and wanted to try a hammertone finish. Cleaned it up, wiped with acetone, thin coats to start, etc. Did the thing, looked nice. I've heard it said before that baking/heating your finishes helps to harden/cure them so I got a $5 toaster oven at Goodwill and gave it a shot. Well, the five buck oven didn't have any kind of temperature control, just a timer. I figured 15 minutes would be a good starting time. I was wrong. The entire finish bubbled up and melted and cracked and turned into swiss cheese all over. So that one is back to the square one.
Oh well, it's just for fun.

Second: I ordered some parts for a build, needed two 10kB mini pots and one 50kB. I ordered two 50kB's and one 10kB. No matter, had another order to place soon thereafter so went to add a 10kB and I guess wasn't paying attention and didn't see the extra zero; ordered 100kB. I'm sure I can just slap a resistor on it but that's annoying to me. :ROFLMAO:

Third: The aforementioned second parts order... I ended up putting that order together sneakily at my work desk and I guess didn't keep a close enough eye on it. Ended up being ONE cap short and it just so happened to be a value that I didn't have any spares of. Again, can probably patch a couple together and get there, but...ugh

I guess that's what I get for not paying close enough attention all around. Live and learn... (y)
