What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I cannot even begin to tell you how much more satisfying it is to take a studio apart than it was to put it together some 20 years ago. I took some pictures for posterity before wheeling everything away. Enjoy the gear porn.

I take this was for educational purposes? That's a cr@p load of gear.....

I was inspired to build again because I was going back to my hometown to record some drums for a friends EP, and decided to throw together a gift I had planned for a while - a cheap PCB (in this case, PCBGuitarMania Lizard Queen because it's really cheap) from scrap parts (no printed enclosure, so I had to do some sharpie magic).

The name translates sort of like "The Barkful Whistle" (whistle like the instrument) with controls for volume, whistle (like the act of whistling) and shaft.

Finnish also has this wordplay/pun thing where you have a two word thing, which becomes something vulgar (well, usually) when you swap the first syllables around. In this case it more or less becomes "The Farting Cock".

I'm quite proud of how the controls and picture work both ways.

In any case, I also wanted to post about the Good Vibes I'm building after I "got the spark" again from building that one (plus also getting a new power supply to replace the broken one).

You ever have that sinking feeling that you really messed up something because the in/out wires are on the wrong sides once you're wiring it up? I had that with the Desolate Fuzz which meant I had put the pots on the wrong side of the PCB and they would have worked the wrong way around.

Just happened with the Good Vibes right now, but as far as I can tell the in/out pads are on the wrong sides of the PCB, so it was thankfully a false alarm.

No MPSA18's (I thought I had them but can't find them anywhere so maybe I used all 15 up at some point? Weird) so I put sockets in just in case, will try some 2N5088 or 5089's first. Also have some Aliexpress vactrols, and if those won't work well I'll try LED's and LDR's instead.

Going through my pile of transistors for a percolator / karma suture board and thought this size comparison was pretty amusing.

2N2222A and a who-knows-what from a bag of random untested transistors. Thought the Ge’s were all bad but it turns out the pinout is B-E-C (there’s no discernible indicator dot on the case) and it sounds pretty dang good here. Will be fun tetris’ing it into a 1590B.

Don’t talk to me or my son ever again.
