Originally I started this for the "build using scraps" contest, but tbh I had to order the enclosure and I don't really want to get involved in that thread. The prizes might be US only too.
It's the Moonn Octomix into a Multiface, so basically Escobedo's Octup Blender into an Escobedo FF variant. The modded part is the simple low pass filter I hacked before the output pot - I think it might be the first time I've cut a trace (at least intentionally), not 100% sure.
I trialed a handful of different transistors for the FF, none of the NPN germaniums I had worked, BC549 was kinda cool because it went all the way to a square wave, but otherwise the BS170 + BS170 combo was the best, up until I tried a BS170 into a J201 - maybe slightly more conventional sounding, but also really nice, and much lower noise than just the BS170's.
Only the finest "visually traced search results" for graphics.
The end result is pretty cool, at least running into a dirty BE100 amp sim (which is my main preset I use on the Quad Cortex) it can get a "fuzz face clean", up until a basic rhythm tone (even up to full blown metal - but to be honest a clean boost might push that amp into metal territory) and into stoner metal shenanigans with the octave included. Drop the clean signal and only use the octave and you can get some quite nasty (in a good way) things going on too.
Special thanks to dylan159 for help with the realization that hit me too late (but still before I build it) about how fuzz faces traditionally don't like other pedals pushing them. A resistor (I ended up with a 100k) between the two circuits did the trick, and I was surprised how well the cleanup was preserved.
Finally installed the Distiller CE into my bass. Was surprisingly painless, although I'm averse to trimming cables, so the battery is now nestled tightly in the rats nest of wires inside.
In case you didn't know, it's an active LPF with a resonance control on the switch for 0/5/12 dB resonant peak.
Not the bench but workbench adjacent-been organizing the basement-- workbench and jamcave areas. I had no idea that I had enough preamp tubes to fill a small ammo case. I have several tungsol and Philips JAN 12ax7s that I didn't even know about. Also found my 1 T-funk 12ax7.
But now they're all(I think) in one spot at least.
I’ve been messing with these tags for a couple weeks. Got enough done now to put them away and move on to drilling some enclosures. Last steps were rounding all the corners and darkening most of them up with a lacquer crayon.
There was that thread going about - “What is 80% of pedal building for you?” Definitely this.
