What are some “must build” pedal circuits that you think everyone should try?

So you just like building pedals and don't have a specific requirement... One approach could be to build one of all the "classics"; ie the pedals that everyone has based their own designs on. So build yourself a dead-nuts replica of a Klon, a TS-808, a Bluesbreaker, etc. So when you try someones "improved" version you have a basis for comparison. You may just prefer the original. Or it may give you an idea on how to make your own version.

Another approach might be to go through the history of dirt pedals. Build a Tone Bender, a Fuzz Face, an early style Big Muff, and work your way through the history. To me it explains why the Tubescreamer sounds like it does. To me a TS sounds like an updated treble booster - slightly muffled highs, prominent mid boost, not much low end. But built more predictably with an op-amp and diodes rather than hit-and-miss Ge transistors. It can be very enlightening to hear the originals as they really were. We get to hear them through reissues and newer versions so much now.
