The type known as a thermionic tube or thermionic valve uses the phenomenon of thermionic emission of electrons from a hot cathode and is used for a number of fundamental electronic functions such as signal amplification and current rectification.

In reality, it's just an abstract made up name. It had to be called something, a lot of time wasn't spent on coming up with a catchy name.

Notice that the Thermionic Distortion is PCB001... Number one, the first. At that point in time there was no "PedalPCB"... The plan was to create one batch of boards, keep one, sell the rest to offset production costs, and move on. There were absolutely no intentions to create a PCB002 (and beyond) and keep going...... and now here we are.

It's all a matter of knowing how words are constructed. Learn ancient Greek and Latin and you're well on your way. For example the word circumcise comes from circum meaning around and cise, meaning to cut. From cise we get excise - to cut out, incisor - a cutting tooth, and incisive - a cutting remark or observation.

Thermionic comes from the Latin thermos, meaning flask for keeping tea warm, and onic meaning a tonic without any tea. Therefore we may deduce that thermionic means a warm bottle of irony which is nevertheless good for you.
