I need to get a new swivel chair for my desk/soldering area. The one I have is noisy as fuck and makes loud popping noises that wake up my wife and kids sometimes. Anybody got any recommendations for a decent one that isn't $500?

I use my grandfather's drafting chair that he had at his workbench
Not dissimilar to this one
Edit to add. It's likely from to 60a or 70s and built like a tank. The footring is nice as I can go from sitting to an elevated standing position on it to reach to to shelf of the workbench easily.

I have a Herman Miller Mirra chair. Unfortunately I suspect it may be more than $500! When I made the switch to digital photography in the early 2000s I found myself sitting at a desk for much longer than I ever had before, staring at a large computer monitor. The cheap office chair I had was killing my back (as was carrying a large and very heavy camera bag it is now obvious). One of the offices I photographed had recently had an upgrade and they had hundreds of new Mirra chairs. Man what a difference it has made. I can use the arm rests raised for computer or soldering and then easily lower them for playing guitar. Lumbar support is adjustable. It reclines. If it only had a headrest it would be perfect for naps!

Stupid expensive but for me worth it. Meanwhile my wife works from home sitting on an old dining chair. Fortunately they are actually quite comfy! I have offered to buy her a Mirra chair but she won't budge. This pic is of a Mirra 2. It doesn't appear to have the adjustable armrests or lumbar support...

I don't have any specific recommendation but broadly speaking I would suggest keeping an eye on local colleges/universities or medical facilities. For instance one of the schools near me does a garage sale every spring... they usually will have things like chairs, desks, IT equipment, all that jazz. It's all used stuff of course, but typically is in really good shape and it's stuff like desk chairs with 65 different ergonomic adjustment levers that cost $900 taxpayer-funded dollars when purchased new, but now the budget's there for some new chairs so out with the old and in with the new....

But in all seriousness, shopping for used "business" or "enterprise" type stuff is a good bet IMO.

I was using one of these.... the last cross bar at the bottom broke off a couple weeks ago.

Last night it finally decided it was done. :ROFLMAO:

I think it'd be a challenge to find a downgrade.

I'm in a pretty OK office chair from the UW surplus outlet. They had desks at the start of the pandemic when nobody else did. I think this chair was around $50.
