Solid question, F1 is a thermal fuse, and it's not mounted flush because its purpose in the circuit is to make sure the varistor next to it doesn't get too hot.What's F1? And why is it not mounted flush (my OCD asks)?
That's more or less how their protection circuit works: when the voltage across the varistor increases its resistance decreases, meaning it will pull more current and start to heat up. When it gets too hot it trips the fuse, which shuts off Furman's "Protection OK" LED. If the voltage gets high enough it will effectively cause a short, tripping the resettable breaker (not pictured as it's panel mount).
So that's all the protection stuff, the "conditioning" part is just an LC pi filter. And that's it. That's the M-8x.
