What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

@MichaelW @DAJE I like their version more than the Squeir personally (this is my second) - but I’ll admit the price difference might cloud some of that judgement. The nut is better quality and I like the neck profile a little more.
30 inch scale; this is the way. I have a Squier Jazzmaster Baritone with a 30 inch scale, tuned A-A. For me that's a lot more usable than a Bass VI tuned an octave below standard. I'm looking at a local retailer that's coming out with a cheapo bari, but it will have a 27 inch scale, which would be good for B-B tuning. Possiblly from the same factory that does Harley Bentons, they look pretty similar. And affordable; shipping cost to the southern hemisphere from the EU doubles the price. (That's AU$ on the site; $US188.55 or 179.20 Euro for you foreign devils.)

I have a lefty friend who has a couple of Artist brand guitars; in as much as I can play them, they seem pretty decent to me. I'm also considering grabbing their Jazzmaster knockoff with the unfortunate name.

Oh man that artist baritone is sharp @DAJE. How much of a difference is a 27 scale vs 30 in terms of what tunings you can use? I tune my bass vi’s to c and c# standard most of the time

Someone’s gotta come out with an SG bass vi though - I looked into making one from scratch or commissioning one before realizing $250 was more the price I wanted to pay lmao

Bass VI is 30 inches so that 's the same as my bari which I tune to A. It's also the same as various short-scale basses like the Gibson EB-3 (AKA SG bass) or the Fender Mustang Bass. So tuning that scale to an octave below standard works - I just find it doesn't work so well with 6 strings. Lighter (baritone) strings work better.

27 - 28 inches is what they usually use for various downtuned metal baritones, so B is probably the most common tuning in that scale length but it's really up to you to figure out what works for you. B would be a good place to start, anyway.

If you're used to C and C#, 27 inches will work well, I'd say better, than 30.

And I agree, bari SG would be excellent. I mean, you could use an EB-3 as a 4 string bari with a set of bari strings or some light bass strings. Tune it ADGC, for instance. That'd work, but it'd be 33% less fun than a proper bari.

Lighter (baritone) strings work better.
What gauges do you use? I use La Bella Bass VI flats which are (pulled from their site) .026 (E), .035 (B), .044 (G), .056 (D), .075 (A), .095 (E) and find them absolutely perfect. I had to drill out the machine heads for the bottom E but not by much. Fits the nut on HB BVIs perfectly though

Ernie Ball bari sets work for me. EDIT: The 13 and 18 are unwound.

If you don’t mind paying a few orders of magnitude more than your $250 price point, you could probably track down one of these:

oh fuck I had NO CLUE this was ever made. Glad I can find things to nitpick about it otherwise this would be my new grail guitar and would be better spent on a down payment on a house.

You could always sleep under the string cover?

It’ll push you over your budget, but it might be worth looking into swapping out a neck on a cheap SG body.
