CONTEST Buddy's Contest

Ok so I updated the Schematic it had 1 error in there I was missing a 1k resistor between Q2-C and the 5k trimmer. This is only the fuzz face side right now. I'm happy to say that I found a GE tranny that fits Q2 nicely. The thing roars! I love it first fuzz face circuit ever and I'm building it! Right now I have the trimmer biased in such a way so that the Tone control covers between 3 and 7.4 V on the collector of Q2. For Q1 I have a 2N229 that has an hFE of 61 and for Q2 I have a 2N1308 with an hFE of 112. From here I'm going to be breadboarding the Range finder side!

Disregard the circuit at the bottom thats a different project ;)

Is it loud enough like that?
Why do you think you need a resistor between Q2-C and the 5K trimmer?
Try switching the transistors and see which one sounds better.

I was following the Sunface Schem and realized he had it in there. As i was fixing a few connections i noticed i left it out so i added it back in. Im going to leave it out and see if it gets even louder!

If you want even more volume, try making the 470Ω bigger (like 1K).

Copying someone else's design without knowing why they did it or even if was a good idea can be a recipe for disaster. I'm not dissing AnalogMan, just pointing out that circuit designs can have "features" that might bite you in the ass. Vintage FF's have a hard time producing unity volume and it comes down to the ratio of the resistors in Q2's collector circuit.

Im going to keep that in mind! I need to start asking more questions on what these components are doing so i have a better understanding on how to go about building these circuits. Im going to make remove the 1k resistor and add it in place of the 470R. I will update asap!

Wow what a difference! Im going to update the schem now. Thanks for letting me know! So whats the point of the 1K in the the sunface? Why restrict that much gain and volume?

Ok so I have the rangefinder breadboarded and it kicks butt!
I used a 2N229 that had a hFE of 59. Biased it to 4.84V.

I connected them together via output from fuzz face to the input of the Rangemaster.
I can tell you already this is going to be one amazing pedal. Ive been having more fun playing with it rather than building it 🤘.
