What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Workbench away from home. With the temperature too cold for sprays, and with the parents too old to climb the stairs to the attic, I claim my place during a visit. Glad to hear their smell still function well 🙈

Ugly white air purifyer panel getting a cast iron coat as well. Plywood dust started to fuck with my nose, especially during sleep. I suspect it's the glue particles? Pine and oak never bothered me. It works surprisingly well! 1000115823.jpg

Finished up assembling this TL-606 cabinet on Monday. Speaker is a Warehouse Guitar Speaker BG-15C. One down, one more to go.

Ran it through band practice Tuesday. First gig on Saturday. What it lacks in low end it makes up for with presence. Picture taken before I put the port cover on.

Hilbish Beta preamp just rules.

And yes, my workbench is whatever flat surface doesn't yet have a project on it.

Cool! I've built several 606 cabs over the years, and have always enjoyed them. But eventually I got hooked into the fEARful thing, and also a few of my own designs with $$$ neo drivers.

The fEarful cabs have interested me but they all seem too "hi-fi." I've never met a cab with a mid/tweeter that I really enjoyed. Maybe in the future I'll build something smallish like a 12/6 for giggles.

I actually moved on from my very early fEARful 12/6 build partly because without a tweeter it was a little too wooly for my frequent jazz gigs on electric upright. But you can make the 12/6 or 15/6 more classically rock friendly by leaving off the LPF crossover section on the woofer, or just build a stock 1515/66, which is already a beastly cannon. In any case, Dave Green is a pretty good friend of mine and IMO he deserves lots of props for the open source vibe he brought to his early designs before he went commercial.

started this HM-2 build last night, got it running this arvo

what an odd distortion.
it’s cool, it sounds great, and i like it, but gosh it’s weird.

does anyone know what that Ge diode pair is doing in this circuit?

i assume it’s some sort of limiter?

- initially tried a D9D pair that measured about 0.7 Vf.
they didn’t seem to ‘compress’ as nicely and the gain control seemed a bit odd.
- then i tried a D9E pair, about 0.34 Vf.
this seemed better than the D9D pair.
- then i tried these 1N277, about 0.33 Vf.

honestly really not much difference, but the D9E did sound a bit duller, where these 1N277 sound better, perhaps sharper in a way i liked.

definitely gonna have to build a Promethium Distortion i reckon

It is a weird one. Of course there’s the swedish thrash dime-everything “chainsaw” sound, but probably my favorite thing to do is to dime the VOL, TREBLE, and BASS, and turn the GAIN down to zero. You get this mid-forward dirty boost that’s interesting by itself or can push a downstream gain stage.

I am a bass player. With basses. I can not play guitar, I’ve got an acoustic which gets played sometimes.

Years back I had a long loan of some Squier japan HH contemporary strat with the trem blocked off … then that went back to its owner….
Then I found a 1980s Yamaha SG400 (think les Paul) in my aunts bin that was nice but humbuckers just aren’t my thing, I tapped the coils and that was nicer… that got sold

Then there was a Japanese Squier strat, I don’t like strats, I don’t like the tremolo I don’t like the way they sound and look and that also got sold quickly - also thick poly finish was not nice. That went …

Then I built a pedalboard for the bass…
Then I went back to a HX stomp
then a friend of a friend showed me a guitar sound on the hx stomp … and it gave me an idea…

And today this was collected … bit nicer than I need - but it’s lovely! And weighs less than 3kg! DE21102E-BC0C-4B3B-9EF2-2931AB516DCA.jpeg

I put some 0.1uF across U2/U3/U4 from V+ to GND. It has helped the LFO tick/bleed that happened with the “isolated” power supply I bought. It’s a pain to solder across the SMT chips, but it helped immensely. So, if you get an EffectsBakery vibe (or other pedal based on the Tri-vibe), the 0.1uF for power supply filtering in the LFO might help (or just look at what Chuck D Bones did).

Also cleaned up my Son of Screamer/Llama 2-in-1 because of either a bad gain pot or terrible connections. Oh, and changed the output capacitor of a 1590A OD-1 from 10uF to 1uF. Sounds a bit better (10uF was really woofy and I think might have been old and not good because of some decay weirdness as the notes died off).

Love your breadboard setup. I use the same wiring for pots.

Suggestion: Slot the pot-holder holes to the edge, then you don't need to undo the nut completely, you just slack it off, slide out the pot and slide in the next value you need, tighten and done.

I've had this gemini pickups hershey bar neck pickup for tele and finally put it in. I'm still in honeymoon phase but first impressions are that it's killer.

Edit: this is a special pickup. It's so exciting to play, and I don't feel that way about the suprocaster in the bridge (though it does it own thing)

Those pickups look really interesting!
