What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I made a clone of the DIYRE TM79 saturation box
https://www.diyrecordingequipment.com/products/tm79-colour

I didnt snap a pic of the inside because I got mad at the end when I ran into an issue. But it does work. If I could do it again I think it may not need the input knob, it needs to run at full bore from what I've tested so far

Testing various mixing schemes for this stereo pickup breakout/EQ box for my Gold Tone Dojo:

The magnetic pickup send goes to a second box with an HPF, PEQ, and resonant LPF section and returns to this pedal for blending. The piezo resonator pickup just gets a resonant LPF, it’s not really making enough bass content to be worth tweaking. Nice to be able to recycle an enclosure for once.

Not pedal related but was on my bench and it may help someone.

I bought some Ernie Ball cables and had some signal cut. No biggie, I thought defective cable (was doing it on a few guitars) so contacted CS which very nicely and graciously sent me a replacement. Same deal. Signal cutting. None of my other cables do that. Then I noticed something wierd: the tip of the jack is wierdly shaped compared to other jacks I have. It seems they don't like my barrel jacks (switchcraft mostly, some are Ibanez stock ones too).

From top to bottom: EB, D'addario, Rean, Hicom.

Notice anything? Yep, the tip of the EB seems much more elongated. I wonder if it is the cause of it.

Ordered a couple of Hicom to replace the jacks and all is well now. Except I also noticed their mono instrument cables are actually stereo shielded: they just tie what would be the ring cable to the sleeve. Kinda wierd choice. I guess they just buy a mega bulk of stereo and use it for mono?

interesting.
i've got a barrel jack on my ibanez (switchcraft replacement, factory ibanez one wore out in less than 2 years).

but in general my experience is that those barrel jacks that ibanez insist on are the fucking pits and should be wiped from the earth.

with the way the spring contacts are designed, with a bout a bees dick of spring travel, they're just a shitty unreliable design in general.
the replacement switchcraft that's in there is already failing after 2.5 years, for the last few months i've been tolerating the odd occasional signal cut if the lead gets moved or tugged, but ideally it should be replaced.
signal cut is regardless of whatever type of lead is being used (incl. those exact ernie ball lead jacks).

i'd be wondering whether your jack is just worn out rather than the shape of the tip being an issue.

tl;dr - barrel jacks suck. especially oem ibanez ones.

I would honestly tend to agree that barrel jacks, even Switchcraft, seem less « grippy » than their classical counterparts but I never ran into an issue with them (except with a used Ibanez 2027xvv but I think this one went to hell and back before I got it). But three guitars are basically new - and I built two of them so I am 100% on the jack brand - and I have zero problem with any other cable.

And barrel jacks look cooler so there is that 🤣

I am making a minor digression from the guitar pedals for my first project that I am building for someone else. It looks like I am also going to lean into the Big Dogs for Bass Pedals. The first one is a Darkglass Alpha Omega, using AionFX's Empyrean Deluxe. I am going to tweak the AionFX design to put back an XLR output and the parallel (thru) jack of the original. This is the project for which I recently built one of the MicroXLR boards.

This is gonna be a push, since I originally planned to send this off by the end of November. I still have to finish up the graphics so I can send the case order in to Tayda...

Got this frame for $250 a while back. When I first built it up it was 15 and 11oz. Or 7.12kg. That is light but I decided to see how far I could push it into weight weenie territory maintaining full functionality.

I swapped the handlebars, saddle, seatpost, tires, inner tubes, and brake calipers. I threw on an electronic groupset and swapped the alloy bolts for titanium. Final weight is now 6.2kg.

My parents are getting up there. I built this for my father to share the joy of biking. I got him a road bike last year but due to his limited flexibility and age, he can only ride in a upright position.

So I put together a Franken Bike. Carbon mountain bike frame. I did not cut the steerer tube down and put a lifted drop handlebar. The seat post is a dropper post with a suspension spring. The wheels are 700c wheels with 40mm slicks. Sram Rival AXS electronic shifting with a 2x chainring. It is surprisingly fun to ride.
