Built mostly stock, mods are -
  • C4 decreased to 2.7u for shorter decay times.
  • C9 & 10 are 27n to shift the lower filter down slightly.
  • R12 & 19 each have a 2MB pot wired in series. These pots serve as Resonance controls for each of the filters. At zero, resonance is stock.
  • Distortion is now on a footswitch.
  • Master volume added to the output, because this thing can get loud with the Rez turned up
  • Sens is logarithmic to help spread out the usable range of the pot

Stock, the EHX Bassballs is probably the most underwhelming envelope filter I've ever heard, but these mods all liven it up, and increase the versatility substantially - quick, aggressive quacks to to subtle slow sweeps. Funky smooth to angry synthy, it covers quite a bit of ground.
No rare parts, no tuning, just filtahz

Super cool. The lowballer is in my current batch and I have a start on it. But rethinking the enclosure because those resonance knobs are great.

+1 on the distortion footswitch even with the volume disparity. I love the BassBalls in a synth bass setup. the upper filter really helps get definition with the octave and fuzz going. Clean it’s less than amazing.

Nice build! I built mine stock and it's a bit underwhelming. What mods do you think have the biggest impact on improving the sound? I'm thinking about changing the sensitivity pot because the sweep on the linear feels like nothing in the first half of the rotation.

I definitely like the Resonance mod.
Expression input for one or both filters ups it's vocal qualities quite a bit

For the sensitivity pot,in addition to a logarithmic pot, place a small value resistor between lug 1 and ground. 2.2k would be a good place to start
