IC Sockets

Over the last few months I discovered that these types of sockets:

Can be a problem. The ICs need to be inserted with considerable force to make sure the IC is making good contact on all pins. Upon reseating parts on pcbs I was ready to abandon they started working. Originally they appear to be inserted but upon inspection they are either lopsided or not all the way in.

Any good alternatives?

Yeah it's strange - I use the machined IC sockets and am yet to have a problem with them, and I have used hundreds if not thousands now. But those socket strips where you cut off what you need are terrible IME. Usually have problems with those.
