The last Broadcast I built I used the silicon transistor that is used in the AR version and it sounds fantastic. I use an 820pF across the collector and base of that transistor to tame treble and it works well. I've never had a problem with a lack of low end - it has plenty and I LIKE a lot of low end.
Through my Tweed amps the higher gain settings make for a great Beatle-esque kind of fuzz. But generally I use it as a boost with a cleaner setting. Lately it has been sounding better and better as I learn how to use it.
