Delegate boneyard breathing/pumping issue

Just finished a boneyard delegate build a few days ago after over a month of trying to source the proper LDR.

It definitely works, but I can't tell if this is just how it's supposed to sound or if something else is wrong. It seems like no matter what variation of settings I use I just get this awkward volume fluctuation that barely corresponds with my playing. It's like the release envelope has to completely let go before the attack can be triggered again. Turning the sustain control down really only results in this volume fluctuation being less extreme, but still completely useless, or just not triggering any compression at all.

I will admit I'm totally new to optical compressors, my only frame of reference being dynacomp types. Based on demos I've listened to I don't think this sounds right, but maybe it's just not the comp for me? I play with lots of slides, hammer ons/pull offs and tapping, so I mainly use a comp to bring those notes up in the mix compared to normal strumming, I can't get this pedal to do that to any degree.

I attached a sound clip so you can hear what I mean. Is this normal? I'm so completely stumped at this point.
