Drum Machine

Probably not what you're looking for, but the other day I wired the gate output of my Theremin to trigger a digital oscillator to make an invisible cymbal:

Makes me feel like Tim the Enchanter.

I’m so t have a drum machine I wanted but never use yet. What do you guys use?

Software is the best bet for production, in my experience. If you want a physical tool for the fun factor, buy a Volca Beats and do the snare and individual out mods

I’m bumping this thread rather than starting a new one. I’m looking at getting a drum machine. Probably the behringer Lm drum. But curious if anybody else has anything to add to the discussion. You guys that already posted, how do you like your drum options? What would buy that’s on the market right now.

DR-660 was my jam.

Also the Roland TR-626. Besides the main outputs, it had an additional 8 outputs split across the instruments

What is the end goal of the drum machine?

What kind of music?

Good questions.
I would add:
• Are you more interested in electronic drum sounds, real drums sounds, or a mix of both?
• Do you want to be able to make your own sounds/samples, or just have a bunch of good preset sounds…or maybe both?

I’ve still got my trusty Korg ER-1, but these days my iPad probably gets the most use as a drum machine. Lots of good drum stuff in iOS land. And the iPad is a nice in-between device: not as cool as dedicated hardware, but definitely more fun than clicking around a laptop.

My 2 favorite drum machine/samplers are the Pocket Operator PO-12 and the Elektron Model:Samples>

The PO-12 is just fun. Super powerful, a ton of fun, a little fumbly to navigate sometimes but I used it a ton.

The Model:Samples is seriously awesome for the price. It's not "drum machine" but a sampler, it comes loaded with great sounding sounds. You can mess with them a bunch and the workflow is super easy to get into right away. You can dive deeper if you want, but honestly, you can just turn it on and start banging out beats pretty quick. I see them pop up for $150-$200 used locally. You can also record direct from USB to your DAW. Sadly, it is only a stereo out. The other downfall is the medical equipment colored enclosure.

Wasn't that the one where you could layer different sounds and pitch shift them?
I vaguely remember pounding out some cool industrial noise loops on one around 99-00
I believe so. I combed through YouTube for hours before I finally bought it.

If you’re comfortable with a MIDI piano roll in your DAW of choice, it can be really efficient. This is coming from someone that tries to avoid a computer during the writing process. I usually make some stupid simple loop, then go back and make changes after I record my stupid riffs.
