Dumble Pedals

I can't believe this series of videos with Henry Kaiser and Alexander Dumble is not getting more mentions in this thread. It's hard not to cringe at him smuggly bragging about his weird sounds that he bought with his trust fund.

I think the problem with the whole Dumble debate is that I don't think we're talking about a particular type of sound that is comprised of certain harmonics and whatnot.

For instance, an IVP-based pedal has a dramatically different harmonic structure compared to a TS pedal due to the way it creates the distortion. Even if you were to apply the exact same EQ curve to each one the result would still be quite different.

So it would seem to me that what we're talking about when it comes to a Dumblesque sound more or less amounts to a certain type of EQ curve. Or am I missing something?

I've got a Dumble Overdrive Special. As much as I'd love to tell y'all its the best sounding amp ever made, Its just not. It does its thing for sure. But nothing amazing. My Trainwreck blows it away.
Over heard this more than once. It’s like the Klon. Mystical and meh….

I saw Santana a while back and he was using his Dumbles. I've also seen him with his Boogies and liked the Boogie sound better. It was still stupid good with either but the Boogies sounded like they were ready to blow up (in a good way).

I was under the impression that the Dumbles were based on Blackface Fenders and each one was customized for that particular customer. I don't know how there is one specific Dumble sound. It always makes me cringe when people refer to pedals as Dumble style. I just wanna ask, "In what way?" I think it started with Al Hermida creating the Zendrive and saying he was aiming for the sound Robben Ford got with his Dumbles. He switched the clipping diodes in the Red Snapper into a Mosfet/Germanium setup. Woohoo, so Dumblesque lol

This goes for most amps. I hear a lot of people out here talking about, "That _________ amp sound" and I have to say that an large amount of amps that should exhibit that [Insert Famous Amp Company] sound all sound pretty damn similar when you crank them up.
I have to agree. This year I have built an 18W Marshall (1974 circuit), a 15W Vox (no idea which circuit!) and a few 5E3s. When you get them biased properly (hugely important and rarely done) they do sound remarkably similar when cranked to the point of overdrive. They each have their own nuances, which the 5E3 having the roundest midrange, the Vox definitely sounding like a Vox and the Marshall being the most trebley/snarly, but I'm not 100% certain that if you heard them in a band mix you could tell them apart. Certainly the player would, but a listener I don't know...

Played clean it's probably easier to tell them apart.

This whole thing has to stop ... Crystal Lettuce is really just deformed and overpriced ICEBERG LETTUCE.

I don't know if Santana was using Dumbles when I saw/heard him, but I got to hear Robben Ford play through his Dumble at soundcheck and during his concert and he made his Dumble amp sound excellent.
However, I'm sure if Ford had played through an old Dean Markley he'd have sounded good, but prolly not to his own ears ...
He's a devout Dumble-disciple.

Are Dean Markley notoriously no bueno? I have a friend who used to play one. I forget what model. I think I remember him saying that it was supposed to be bassmanish.

In my case it's been 25 years since I sold it so I genuinely don't remember. That's why I'd like to borrow one to see what it was like with some experience of having played a load of different amps.

Well said. I'm a fan of reasonably priced gear and don't look down my nose at ANYTHING. If it sounds good, it IS good. Sure I love big budget stuff but it certainly won't make me sound any better.

In the same vein the best beer is the one in my glass...

This is super important.

We hear with our eyes quite a bit by way of how our brain catalogues various information. For instance, if you hear often that certain mojo parts help your tone, even if science and testing says they don't, it WILL likely make a difference.

Same with beer. We drink beer with our eyes and nose as much as our mouth. The appearance of a beer in both how it looks and it's foam are big factors in how we enjoy the beer. In the same way as mojo parts, if you brew your own beer according to a specific practice/methodology, you are likely to think that method made the beer better, even if it didn't.

In the end it doesn't matter. If it makes you play better/tastes better to YOU, then it is better. Doesn't mean it technically is, but often times that is irrelevant outside of just trying to win arguments on the internet.
Is that the royal we? I grab the cheap case of beer, stick it in the freezer until it is on the edge of freezing, then guzzle from the can as the lord intended.
