CONTEST Fig Friday 🤦‍♂️

CONTEST

fig

Village Idiot
Good News Everyone (including Europe), it's Fig Friday! That means a yummy $100 gift code 😋 from Musikding !

I've only made two orders from them and one was this gift code, but their shop is mentioned frequently in these parts for parts in those parts so there you have it.

Tell us all about your biggest, funniest, most horrifying goof when ordering parts and you may get the chance to top it :ROFLMAO:.

Got capacitors the size of a beer can?

Early on in my building experience, particularly stripboard builds, one of the layouts called for a SPST switch. Not knowing any better I picked up this bad boy that was waaaay too big and heavy duty for a simple pedal. I did eventually find a use for it. It wasn't until I read somewhere here that you can use a simple spdt switch and only connect 2 of the lugs.

Ordered about 25 SPDT switches instead of DPDT. Such sadness when I got my magic pink baggies. Anymore I just get gunshy on clicking *place order* because I know I will realize a need within hours after hitting it. So I just never hit the button and watch the part count climb.

Got capacitors the size of a beer can?

As a recent beneficiary of @fig's kindness, I am not entering this contest. But I did once get some 3300uF caps when I meant to get some 3300 pF. THAT was a surprise.

The pedal that got me into pedal building, Benson Preamp. My first attempt at the build was a bust but my second attempt worked… I was so excited to make a look alike and didn’t really understand enclosure size at that time, the 1590xx looked about right so I ordered it. Turns out it was HUGE but I stuck to my guns and built it out anyway, had to order some extra large MXR knobbers to make it seem proportional. Always learning…

Edit: not an official entry.

This one's recent and technically ongoing. It hurts a bit.

After moving back to N Ireland I got my workshop/music room all setup and have built up 6 pcbs ready to house. I placed a £180 order with Banzai for 10 Enclosures, audio grade electros and some opamps.

After chasing them for a while (standard banzai practice) my order finally shipped but never arrived with me. I tracked the order and my heart sank when I realised it had been shipped to my old address in England and has apparently been delivered. It looks like I didn't update my details with Banzai and missed the delivery address when ordering because I'm an idiot.

I've gotten in touch with a friend in England who's trying to track it down by visiting my old neighbours to see if any of them took the package in.

Fingers crossed it turns up and he can send it on. The funny thing is my wife and I have a running joke about her sending stuff to old addresses months after we've moved house but this time it me :ROFLMAO:  :ROFLMAO:

That hurts 😭😭🤕

My last error was on the knob for my headphone amp build, I was so happy to find a black chicken head that I did not see it was for splined shaft... and just saw the 6.35mm version is b/o until march. Oh, and I thought I had a DPDT mini on hand so ordered none, turns out it's 3PDT, so my output selector mod will have to wait.

Honestly I'm trying to stay positive that Connor will be able to locate it for me and that one of my old neighbours has it.

If I didn't laugh I'd cry so going for laughing and optimism until I know for sure.
I once ordered a significant quantity of 125bs and 3pdts but wasn't home when it was delivered. Somebody porch-pirated it. I have no idea what they'd do with all that stuff, but I hope they needed it more than I did! Hopefully your stuff turns up!! That's a real kick in the slats.

Well, not a big goof, as I'm a bit paranoid with my ordering, and apart from forgetting the random component when I order, I'm pretty good getting things right.

I got a commission recently for a Conqueror from someone who had the board but never got into building pedals.
I asked him for photo to confirm what version of the board it was, and I still ordered a transformer instead of the inductor...
I ordered the right part realizing my mistake (ordering late at night after a couple of strong beers might not be the best idea) so all good.

Both these order were done in October with Musikding (I only ordered with them once before), and I received both in the last couple of days using the untracked letter option. My experience with them were great and I fully recommend them.

See that would annoy me more than my own screwup. I didn't check the delivery address properly just the billing address. That's fully on me. Someone just stole yours off your porch and probably ended up bining it, or they still have it in a cupboard somewhere and don't know what to do with it. Those people are Trash.

Thanks @fig for yet another contest! I can hardly keep track, but this one "speaks" to me .. ähem.

Here are some capacitors, with a potentiometer for size comparison. The two red/orange ones, I ordered without thinking about voltage ratings.
The funky ones are from an Italian combo amp from the 70ies that I bought (very cheap) ... as I thought: Hey, Mojo parts for pedals and a nice cab for my little amp at home.
The cab is nice, but after gutting the amp, I've been sitting on a big bag of those rather silly, big old'n'greasy caps that I just can't put to use (yet?) .

And for the record: Musikding is great!

I don't know if I top anyone, but I've made a few boo-boos:
  • Ordering 1N4006 instead of 1N5817. These were rated for 800V IIRC. You cannot bend the leads by hand.
  • Getting a 8mmx20mm 470uF cap for my Derailer.
  • Too many purchases of transistors and ICs from China when they were available at Mouser. Going cheap never pays off.
  • Buying a bunch of 10mm LEDs because they'll look funny. They look funny not sitting in an enclosure.
  • Bulking up an order at PCBGuitarMania because they had a sale and are cheaper because they are in Europe. My frustration was not worth the savings.
  • Terminal blocks which were bought without checking the spacing. Ended up being 5mm..
Non-parts related:
  • Getting a second strat because I love my #1 so much. Not playing the second strat because I love #1 so much.
  • Swapping the pickups on the second strat to try and make it better. Playing #1 more.
  • Wanting another strat because I love my #1 so much but it doesn't have a rosewood fretboard.
