How do YOU like to use delay?

I'm a big fan of atmospheric delay use– Think Flock Of Seagulls, new wave-era Rush, the Police, etc. rather than the U2 dotted eights. I like something around the range of an eighth-note triplet or quintuplet, but just far enough off that it doesn't lock too tightly. with a high mix and 5 or 6 repeats.

My very often on delay is a carbon copy, either slap back or with a longer delay time for a spacey sound. I also have the DMM 1100-TT which can get to really spacey sounds although it’s a bit noisy. Lastly I also have the Minifooger one which has a very dark sound and it works well for ambient sounds with rumbling low end (not for everyone I admit). I have been wanting to get a tape style one and now that the new Space Echo came out I’m itching for one…

I have rhythmic U2-type dotted 8th delays programmed into my Atomic Amplifire, and then some subtler lead delays (Flashback) dialled in on my Plethora X5. I tend to set one or the other and not both. Always paired with either normal reverb (Hall of Fame) or a bigger, ambient wash (Jet Revelation). Usually doing this with the Top Boost patch on the Amplifire, through a Yorke Audio IR (amazing quality) and with various drive pedals I've built in front of the amp sim.

I just happened to watch this video, and it reminded me that I had made this thread. The video has the kind of info I was looking for

I'm a big fan of delay and often use it as a thickener, for solos, as a rthymic part for hooks and for general weird shit.

I recorded this a few weeks ago ahead of a rehearsal with some old band mates I reconnected with when we moved back to N Ireland. The delay runs through the entire track but is being scaled back a bit in the version we're currently working on. I'll post an update once we have the new version recorded with bass, drums and vocals

I’m absolutely loving my Andy Timmons type delay at the moment. Hydra (heads 1,2 & 4 engaged) into a carbon copy to give a pseudo reverb type sound. It’s a very good thickener. I have the age knob of the hydra set to make the repeats really dark so it doesn’t overwhelm.
