[SOLVED] JamMan Xt Solo power supply replacement question

Hello,

The XT Solo Loop Station power supply just died. it was old, i might as well buy a new one.

The problem is that the DC power input jack on the JamMan is slightly smaller than the usual ones. I can't use my other power supplies, their connectors are slightly too big and won't fit.

This circuit requires 200mA, the manual mentions a PS0920DC-01, but i'm not sure if these power supplies have all some smaller connectors ?

I did some research and it seems that these JamMan XT solo units have been produced with various DC power jacks, with various diameters. So i probably cant just order any power supply online that says "compatible with JamMan XT solo".

I am in France, the best option is often Thomann for all the music equipment. It's cheaper and they deliver fast.

Thomann probably have something that could be a good replacement, but i don't know what to look for.

I wonder if anyone could tell me what are the various diameters for 9V power supplies connectors ?

The usual 9V DC jack are 2.1 mm, i guess i need the smaller type.

Thank you very much for your help, every suggestions and observations are welcome !

...i guess i need the smaller type.

First step is to confirm what size you have, exactly.

Here are some "standard" sizes:
  • 1.3
  • 1.4
  • 1.95
  • 2
  • 2.1
  • 2.35
  • 2.5
After that...
Personally I'd ...
- open it up and see what's on the PCB (I'm betting the jack is soldered directly and not offboard wired).
- I'd desolder it, measure all physical dimensions.
- Hunt data-sheets on Mouser/Digikey/Tayda/etc to find matching pin-placement and physical dimensions, find a match with 2.1 barrel diameter
- Get the new Wall-Wart that matches the electrical requirements of the JamMan and if it doesn't come with a 2.1 plug, cut the existing plug and solder on a new 2.1 plug.

That's a lot of work, but at least you'd then have a standard pedal-sized jack and could possibly power it from your PedalBoard's PSU instead of from a wall-wart. FEASIBLE because power required isn't too bad: Adapter 9.0VDC 2.0A; pedal itself 9VDC 350mA.
Model: PS0920DC-01
Input: 100-240 VAC, 50/60Hz
Output: 9 VDC 2.0 A
Polarity: Centre Negative

EASIER would be to find a wall-wart that puts out 9.0VDC 2.0A and if it doesn't come with a plug the correct size for your SoloXT's jack, cut it off and find one that is. Needs to be "Class II power adapter that conforms to the requirements of EN60065, EN60742, or equivalent."

Don't forget to add the Ferrite Choke to the new supply (as per the manual).

CONTACT DIGITECH if you're unsure; following are all from Thomann, with centre -neg :
9VDC, 500 mA, 2.1 (requires swapping out plug to whatever your size is) — https://www.thomann.de/gb/boss_psa_230.htm
9VDC, 1000 mA, 1.6https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_nt_0985_c.htm
9VDC, 1300 mA, 1.2 —https://www.thomann.de/gb/rockpower_power_supply_adapter_nt_5_eu.htm
9VDC, 500 mA, 2.1 —https://www.thomann.de/gb/rockpower_power_supply_rp_nt_22_eu.htm
9VDC, 1700 mA, 2.1 — https://www.thomann.de/gb/rockboard_power_ace_9v_dc_1.7v_multi.htm

Multi https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_netzteil_universal_312_600.htm:
3-12VDC (set it to 9), 600 mA, DC Adapter:
  • DC adapter (3.50 x 1.35 mm)
  • DC adapter (4.00 x 1.75 mm)
  • DC adapter (5.00 x 2.10 mm)
  • DC adapter (5.50 x 1.50 mm)
  • DC adapter (5.50 x 2.10 mm)
  • DC adapter (5.50 x 2.50 mm)

I'd look beyond Thomann.

Thank you very much for your exhaustive reply !

Lots of good ideas.

Not sure how to check if it's class 2 and if there are "ferrite choke" but i have another similar loop station from boss, the RC-3, and it works with a standard boss power supply.

Do you think it would be really risky to take a boss power supply and replace the DC plug with the old one from the broken JamMan power supply ?

Both circuits have approximately the same features and functions, so i guess their designs and power requirements are very similar.
I looked at some pictures of ferrite choke and it looks like boss power supplies have something like that. Boss power supply's cable have some kind of plastic box near the 9V connector. On the other hand, the Harman PS0920DC-01 doesnt have this... (although the power supply itself is slightly bigger).

And i might have been confused on the sizes. The center (metal thing in the middle of the DC jack's hole) is bigger on the JamMan than on the usual DC jacks. I thought my other plugs wouldn't get in because they were too big, i assumed that the JamMan's DC jack's hole was too tight, but it could be because of the bigger center. So i guess these numbers are related to the size of the negative center.

Yeah, it's just about hunting for the specs and making sure it meets or exceeds the required specs.

The SoloXT might draw (for example) a max of 350mA or whatever, so if your power adapter is rated to handle 500mA and the jack fits... you're good to go.

In other words, the replacement part doesn't have to be identical to the original to make the pedal work. You'll just need to do the homework to figure out what alternative will also work.

I just received the power supply replacement.

It's a regular 9V power supply, with an adaptor to fit the JamMan DC jack. I just tried it and it seems that everything is working correctly.

Thank you for your help !
