I really didn't need another delay but the UA Starlight delay was on sale at a local store... And it sounds great! I've had most of the high-end delays - the Strymons, the Eventides, the Empress... I've been using a Source Audio Collider because it's small and has both reverb and delay and while it sounds good there is something about it which doesn't quite gel with me. No idea what it is - I just can't bond with it. I have kept my Strymon Flint because it's an excellent reverb and tremolo pedal - I only use the middle settings and that's enough for me. But the other Strymons don't do it for me for whatever reason.
The UA Starlight just sounds right. As soon as I started using it I knew it was good. Somehow it can envelop my guitar sound but still keep out of the way. The clarity and tone is fantastic. It only has one preset (bummer) but still I can make that work by setting the pedal up for a slapback sound then going between that and my longer, ethereal preset. The degraded tape sound is one of the best I've heard and the Memory Man setting is epic. Somehow it it more fun to play than the average delay. I can get all the sounds I want (which is not that many) and they are all excellent, and they don't interfere with the guitar sound I have spent so long getting to sound right. My sound doesn't get lost or compressed or muddied - fab. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles a lot of other units have and I'm delighted that it doesn't have any "shimmer" modes - I can't stand that sound. Everything it has is usable and sounds top notch.
One of the best sounding delays I have heard, and dead quiet too. Highly recommended.
