Mellow fuzz

Hey guys and dolls-

I have been working through some vids about the 1.5 billion different fuzz pedals out there. I’ve fallen for a more mellow type fuzz. Strangely enough, the sound that gets me to perk up me ears is something similar to the TC honeypot fuzz, and the Joyo Dr J planes walker. A more mellow type fuzz with some low end and mids. I know the honeypot is a green russian, andI’ll be ordering a pcb today. Any thoughts on other similar type fuzzes?

Try some KD521V diodes in your Green Russian build. They have a lower Vf than the 1N4148 or 1N914 that most other muffs use, and it has a noticeable effect on the tone. If you can’t find any, try 1N4150, which has a similar I/Vf curve and is still in production. The 1N4150 is a good option for Triangle/early Ram’s Head builds, too. Those also used diodes with a lower Vf than the 1N4148 and 1N914.

You might also like the PedalPCB Teddy Rupture/KMA Fuzzly Bear. It’s got a lot of low end and can be mellow, depending on how you set the gain and bias (and your guitar’s volume knob).

I’ll check it out, thanks for the input. I like the play on Teddy Ruxpin. I used to put black sabbath tapes in my little sisters, just to freak her out.

Anyone got a few kd521v they’d be willing to part with? I’d rather spend the cash here than double the price in shipping. I’m not sure I’m ready to go down the esoteric hard to find parts that you have to wait a month for and may not even be real or work well rabbit hole yet. I did it with fly tying (sometimes it was actually rabbit!) and money goes *poof*.

I built a Muff with germanium clipping diodes and some leaky germanium transistors and from eBay.

The output was low and would likely need some recovery to be usable but it had a very unique sound.

SupaToneBendah!

Not the two or three transistor FuzzFace-ish Tonebenders, but the SupaMuffyTonebender with only one clipping-diode stage instead of the Muff's regular two clipping-diode stages.

The Scarab Deluxe can get quite mellow. It has excellent Tone controls and a Bias knob for some weirdness. One of my favourite Muff style fuzzes is the Basic Audio Alter Destiny. It has Bass, Mids and Treble controls and is a lot lower gain than most Muffs. It's a very flexible, usable fuzz which fattens single coils well and works with HBs too. I don't know of any PCBs for it but do have a schematic.

Schematic please and thank you. That sounds killer.

Just to throw in my two cents. My favorite all around smoothish fuzz is a peach fuzz. It can get to muff territory all the way to 60s raspy stuff closer to a tonebender. Plus it cleans up with the volume knob, which my muffs can't.
