My First Circuit

I'm still home from work so I've had some time to play around and experiment a bit.

Today I decided to put a little light box together for my daughter. She likes flipping switches so I figured I'd throw this together.

I know it's about as basic as a circuit can get, but I am kinda proud of myself because I just kind of winged it with what basics (very basic) I know of and figured it out on the breadboard to be sure and then wired it up with a few bits of vero. Worked first shot!

I only had one battery snap so I was limited in the number of LEDs or I'd have done more. As it is though I'm not even sure how long it'll last - it could suck that battery in a few minutes for all I know! Guess I'll find out when the kiddo wakes up from her nap.

I just eyeballed the drilling and I shoulda measured, but that's why it's all cockeyed.

Love it. I made an atari punk console for my 2 and 4yo. Housed it in an old oolong tea tin. They were way into it until they broke it. Don't get too attached to that toggle switch. Thanks for reminding me to fix that.

I built a simple 2 oscillator drone synth using lm386s and one with an LDR to change pitch and my kids love them. Mostly they love setting it to the absolute highest pitch screech setting, but then they detached the battery connections on both. Not sure I will be fixing them anytime soon. Sometimes sharing your hobbies with your kids can be detrimental to your sanity and hearing

Tayda has some 10mm LEDs which could be fun. They sell the bezels for them too. And if you wired them up to a momentary switch the battery would last longer too! You can get some cool steel push button switches which are a lot harder wearing than toggles.

The larger LEDs would be great, thanks for that. I've got a Tayda order I'm waiting to quadruple check so I'll throw some in. I'll also throw in some other switches as well. Ideally I'd like to make a larger one with more lights and multiple switches for her. She loves flipping switches.

I wanted to use larger LEDs. I have 5MM but the vf was too high on all the colors I had to be able to use four with a single 9v, which is why I used the bitty ones.

Building things for your kids is fun. I had a proud moment when my son was around 8-9 years old. He drew a kinda plan for a toy catapult. Being the encouraging dad that I tried to be I said ok, let's build it. So we got some scraps of timber and made it according to his plans and in the process he learnt to adjust his plans when he found something didn't work as he thought it would. We built it and it worked. Then he spent more time painting it than using it as a catapult.

Now he's 24 and just got his first job as a graduate architect. I suspect that every building he designs will have a catapult.

That's great. You sound like a great dad and you must be pretty proud of your son!

My daughter just turned two and already has so much personality. I'm stoked to get to know her and to share interests with her and support her in the things she digs.

Are those leds in parallel? Put them in series and you can get more leds in the circuit. I can usually run~10, 3mm leds on 2-3 AAA batteries.
