Origin Effects Revival Drive

I have the Revival Custom, and have to admit to not opening it up in the 2 years I’ve had it. It is truly amazing, and often, drives that I think are really neutral and open sounding will get close, but the Revival sounds like my guitars round core nickel wound strings, and pretty much every other solid state drive I’ve tried, at best, will sound like I’ve changed to flatwounds. The harmonic structure of the strings has declined somehow. I think the cleanest (and it is neutral to!) drive I have is the Comprehensive (at 18v), but it does this same loss of harmonics. So does, to the same extent, my Unit67 and my Creation Audio Labs (48 v) Holy Fire, which both can be set in that super clean way.

I also think it is massive inside. I’m picturing several stacked boards, all SMT. When I get back home in 2 weeks I will open it, just for the heck of it. If it is through hole, I’ll be happy to be wrong.

The clips I’ve heard of these are incredible but I have limits on what I’m willing to spend on pedals.

The price certainly puts me off. There are a few pedals by these guys which look good but crazy expensive. I wonder if they would be possible to build in a PedalPCB way? The Strawberry Red Overdrive by One Control is a (to me anyway) quite complex OD but is available for around 1/4 to 1/3 the price of a single Revival Drive.

The PCB you see is just the first layer. Definitely not a feasible DIY through hole project.

I tried it once for a while as a friend asked me to repair it (change a dirty pot) and while it certainly sounds good, it has that overpolished and very well behaved tone with a lack of character that I really didn't dig.
