I use mine all the time. It’s weighted enough to stay put on your bench and is immune to heat.

I have a small slab of hard wood which I have drilled some holes into for much the same purpose. I use it to build on. The holes are around 6.5mm so I can hold pots still to desolder the lugs.

I originally drilled the holes to keep right angle jacks in place while I soldered patch cables. So some of the holes are at the distance apart that I wanted to make patch cables. Want a 4" patch cable? Put the jacks into the holes which are 4" apart.
