Please help me figure out what effect this is.

It's sounds like a bit crusher or ring modulator but I don't think it is. Everything on the Internet says she only uses 2 reverb pedals. A Line6 Echo Park and a Boss RV6.

You first hear it at 2:42. The effect I'm after can really be heard at 3:50 to 3:56.

Here is the live version which shows that it is a guitar. You can hear the effect but it is much less prominent.

Running one reverb into another can sometimes give you the kind of washy shimmer depending on what pedals and types of reverb used , it sounds like the second reverb might just be used as a momentary sort of deal…. Just a guess. Have you tried running a two reverbs, to try and duplicate it? Maybe try running one in front of the amp (like a overdrive) and one in the loop, push the amp to just the edge of break up… that’s where I would start with the info at hand… could be a fun experiment.

Right, I was thinking it may be some sort of degradation artifact thing like when you run a delay before a distortion pedal.

I don't think it's momentary, I seems to be always on but the degradation gets stronger with harder picking and more atonal note combinations

On “Elegy” it sounds like shimmer reverb on a guitar that’s feeding back. On “Beyond Love” it’s distortion and reverb - then she plays a note, lets it ring, then plays a half step down (or up) at the same time. Creates a dissonant sound especially with distortion. Not sure if that’s what you’re talking about though.

could just be the tuning of the guitar for the last nudge, waaaaaaay back in HS days 1 of the guys got to goofing around with plucked harmonics, it'd give this... feeling either the amp or the string was about to end it all. fed in to a reverb and SD or DS-1... or maybe she just has something from parsit studios hidden in that fog  :ROFLMAO:

Agree, Reverb into dirt and pinch and plucked harmonics. Dissonant stuff is 1/2 octave harmonics with bends and a few string scrapes.
Probably using the expression input on the Boss to go ful wet at times.
Harmonics into a full wet shimmer will get you real close to high pitch ring mod territory.

Sounds like the consesus is that it is a digital reverb into distortion with dissonance between two notes causing the beating and bitcrushed type digital artifacts. I'll run with that and do some experiments. Thanks for the help!
