Think I found a new favorite pedal. The more I learn about all these amazing circuits, the more I find myself really being intrigued by the original designs. While the Range Finder does have a couple neat and very usable upgrades (8 position rotary and phase inverter) it’s a great representation of a classic; one that until now has flown under my radar. When I finished with my first couple of these and tested them out, I was instantly wowed. Of course, had the volume maxed on the RF and my amp a decent amount of gain -BAM! What a sound!!
Anyway, tried a couple different PNP’s I had laying around with the standard formula (60-120 hfe, low leakage & and collector biased to -7v) and they all sounded great. No noticeable variation between 2n404a’s, MP16b’s and MP20’s a few from each varying between 60-90hfe. I’ll have to try some trannies in the 120’s-150’s to see if there’s much of a difference.
As with all PedalPCB boards, I highly recommend this one. Just really excited about stumbling across this one and hope others who were on the fence might do the same!
Edit: when I build this again, I might use a 10k trimpot in place of the 5k the docs called for. A lot of the transistors I tried were able to be easily biased with the 5k, but a couple only got up to -6v max. Probably would work, but why not get that little extra nudge.
