2. it’s a bit tricky but I think very doable, maybe get a couple extra just in case you mess up. I recommend having some tweezers and something to hold the pcb Since it’s so small (either helping hands or some blue tack). I melt a little solder on one pad first. Then hold the jfet there with tweezers and quickly heat that pad. This holds it in place to quickly hit the other two pads with solder.

I highly recommend the smd route, I used to avoid jfet builds because I had trouble sourcing good through hole ones. Now that I’m used to this way I do lots of jfet builds and won’t look back!
 
Thanks - I'll likely give this a try; seems the worst thing that happens is that I mess up a few SMD JFETs and boards.
