Tayda UV Printing

Print issues aside, has anyone else noticed an improvement in their powder coating?

I order a lot of enclosures from them, and over the past year maybe 3 in 5 boxes had overspray inside that needed sanding to properly ground. About 2 in 5 had overspray in the screw holes. Not the end of the world, but more work for me.

My last two orders of maybe 10+ only had a couple of these, and it looks like maybe they are masking now.

I was actually wondering about that as well. I used to need to tap every single hole to clean them out, otherwise I was literally breaking screws trying to get them in. Now the screws go straight in, and I only end up re-tapping maybe one in a hundred or so.

The last few orders I have made seem like they are masking or at least making a better effort not to overspray. When i powdercoated my own boxes years ago i used silicon plugs that could go in the screw holes. They worked great and they are reusable. Maybe they have gone to that to save them time and us headache, lol. Especially since it looks like masking hasn't been an option to add recently. For the price per box and not having to order 25+ its really hard to beat their pricing. Even if there is a bit of overspray on a few :)

Man, seems like they're only getting slower right now. Placed a small order on March 6. Just six enclosures total, four different colors, six different designs, no drilling. The first two powder coats were just finished last week, third one is currently in progress. No UV prints started as of yet. I wouldn't mind usually but one of the enclosures is for a commission, so that sucks.

I received my February 24 order over the weekend, my February 27 order just started powdercoat today. They'll get to it eventually, but yeah they're definitely not getting any faster.

Tell you what- you all buy me a UV printer, and I’ll do prints for free!
A refill of ink will run you $250, and if the printer sits idle for more than 1-2 days you'll need to purge the lines and printheads. Buying the printer is just the start, running it long term is expensive and is basically a full-time job.

Source: I used to own a UV printer.

Never mind!

Damn, that sounds like a pain in the ass.

Yeah it's a really neat thing to have around when it's working well. But after the 4th or so time that mine broke I just got tired of dumping time and money into it and scrapped it. Mine was about the cheapest printer you can get (~$2500), and I would hope the name-brand ones (starting at $10k) are easier to run and take care of, but I've never used one.

When Tayda started getting backed up I was briefly considering picking up a nicer machine and doing them myself again, but then I remembered that I typically order 100 or so enclosures at a time, and milling, powdercoating, and printing 100 boxes would take me longer than it takes Tayda, I literally wouldn't have time to build the damn pedals.

Seems like the luck of the draw to some extent (?) I ordered one enclosure March 6 also, and they powdercoated it late last week, then did the UV job late Sunday (probably Monday morning their time) and shipped it out.

Probably optimizing for getting an order shipped out for just one enclosure, versus multiple enclosures, some of which haven't been powder coated yet. Like mentioned before, they also powder coat them in batches.

My order was shipped on Saturday, btw, should be here today I think.

The odyssey continues. All paint and UV jobs were either completed or had started some time last week. Then two enclosures were flagged for QC issues. Clicked the "start over" button, double checked my files and couldn't find any issues. No updates since then. Opened a ticket just now and hope this will get things moving again.

Do you mean the message that says "Don't click "Start over", it's an error in the printing, you don't need to do anything except wait for 4-5 days"?

No offense but if it's the same message I got every time I had QC issues, it literally spells everything out and you didn't need to do any of the stuff you did.

The site says 6 business days for color enclosures and 6-10 business days for UV printing. So a total of 12-16 business days for color enclosure + UV printing. It has been what, 13 business days since March 6 now?

No, it changed to that message a day after I clicked "Start over". I can't remember exactly what it said at first, but something along the lines of "You can either start over or print as is, in which case you accept any flaws". Paint and UV jobs were still at 4-5 business days wait time when I placed the order from what I remember.

In that case it's probable it was the QC problem but they put in the wrong error message, in which case your confusion is very understandable! But if it has the QC problem message now, it's probably fine and will just take a little longer.

Last time I ordered, the QC message was still showing on one of my enclosures when the order shipped...

Has anyone ever tried to have a print with only a gloss layer ? I want to make a "gloss only" print over a matte enclosure. Not sure if I can order only a gloss and if so, do I need the color layer in the file if it's empty ? If buying the uv print is absolutely required, then I'll just add red to my drill points but If a can spare the expense why not.

I’ve done it. Worked well. I put an empty color layer, but it may work without one at all. I figured it’s easy enough to add the empty layer so why risk it getting thrown back if I don’t have it

Thanks for the answer!

Did you need to buy/apply a uv print service or only the gloss was enough?
