Thru Hole substitute for 2SK3557 for the Skeptical Boost?

I'm curious if anyone's made this pedal using through hole parts for their jfets, would something as common as a 2N5457 work? Or J201?

Not made a Skeptical boost, but a J201 or 2N5457 might work in place of the 2SK3557 where the Vgs(Off) spec is in range of that of the 2SK3557. JFET Vgs(Off) values have a fair amount of swing.
J201 @ -0.6V to as low as -1.4V
2N5457 @ -0.5V to as low as -6.0V
2SK3557 @ -0.3V to as low as -1.5V

Always worth checking/comparing the datasheets.
