Today’s Eclipse- anyone else in the path?

I have an auto that I love, but this definitely seems like a job for the old school fixed shade.

I saw a video where they said that regular welding shades are not thick enough and they have to measure 14 (whatever units of measurements people use in America for shades…???)…

The through-holes of the PCB are acting as a bunch of pinhole cameras projecting the eclipse onto the BOM.

Yeah I wasn't prepared for the eclipse whatsoever. I was in the middle of verifying some new PCBs and just grabbed a board on the way out the door.

Got to see one back around 61 or 62 when I was like 5 or 6. This is the only eclipse in SoCal today:

I once went out to an observatory to take pictures for a magazine. The guy there was super keen on showing whatever I wanted as soon as I showed any interest - and I love stuff like telescopes. So he got out his sun telescope. It was amazing. It's specially designed to observe the sun so has very dark filters or something on the lens. You could see the boiling gas pock marking the surface of the sun. There were flares coming off the edges. I could have sat there for hours watching it. Crazy stuff. And this was with no eclipse at all!

We had an eclipse here a year or so back. I used a pinhole camera to watch it. My business card has a tiny hole in the middle to use for moments just like this.

I was considering making a PCB pinhole viewer specifically for this purpose...

I figure I can probably have the build docs ready in time for the next one in 2044.

Our school district gave the day off, which is great because I was going to pull the kiddos (11, 7, and 5). We picked up a few pizzas and went to the park an hour early to make an afternoon of it!

All-in-all, a fun day.

This was the peak in D.C. (Also the best I could do with an iPhone X) But with the cloud cover, you could actually see it with a naked eye -- even if just for a second. Very cool!
