Vehicle shopping

I hate shopping for a vehicle almost as bad as going to a dentist, looking for a mid sized SUV with AWD, all suggestions and experiences are welcome

I’m not sure what your budget is but, you can’t go wrong with a newer Mazda or Toyota. I bought a Mazda CX-5 and have absolutely no complaints. Safe, reliable, great on gas. The Mazda cx-9 is in the category of mid size suv.

Yes and they are highly rated

Good luck to you. it's a seller's market currently with the low inventory, production stoppages and high demand.

The availability of midsize SUVs is probably better than what I am looking for which is a fun, subcompact with a manual transmission. I walked into a Carmax the other day hoping to test drive a Fiesta ST only for the sales rep to tell me tests drives were only for people willing to buy the day of purchasing.

FWIW, I capitulated to my wife in her demands for an AWD SUV and we got a CR-V. Overall it is a quality vehicle with nice interior. I can't say I'm a fan of the lane assist, departure warning, engine idle off, or other safety features.

AWD is a must for me, we have a steep gravel driveway

I will echo this. I drive a Toyota Rav4 with All wheel drive, which is great for Canadians winters. They are built to last, and not crazy to work on if you’re a DIY’er(who am I kidding, look what forum we’re on!) I also like that they are built here in Canada just a few hours drive from me.

I’m definitely a Toyota guy. Have been for over 20 years and I have only owned two. The only reason I bought the second was the car seat wouldn’t fit in my Tacoma. Not that it means anything from me but I think Toyota’s are worth the extra money.

+1 came here to say pretty much the same thing (except the working on it, not too good on that front). Really happy to have graduated from a small car to the Rav4 with AWD, especially as we go more to my in-laws cabin. Pretty useful when 25 cm of snow drop in a day... Picked it up used at 70K km, and it was clean as a new. 40K km later, it still runs great with basic maintenance.

My first car was a Toyota Corolla. That thing killed my back. And the clutch kept coming loose from the firewall as it was kept in place with a circlip which liked to pop off at inopportune moments. It got so I kept a packet of spares in the glove box. I ended up hating that car. Then I got a Mazda which had great seats and was a lot more fun to drive. Now I have a Honda which is kinda white bread but indestructible. If I wanted an AWD I would get a Subaru. My son has one and it's ridiculously comfortable, drives like a dream, has better AWD than most and a boxer engine which will run and run. Subarus are great cars and as reliable as anything can be.

I'm hoping my boring Honda lasts long enough that my next car will be electric.

The folks have had all manner of marques, I've had Toyota, Mazda, Volvo, Buick — most all manufacturers make some great cars, and they all make duds. Gotta do your homework before buying, Motor Trend used to be a pretty good resource, I don't know if it still is. When buying new, my Dad would research a car for six months, then take another six pitting dealerships against each other. He didn't do that often, because that combo resulted in cars that lasted, and lasted, and lasted.

Barry, even though you're looking to buy used, try to find a car that was built on a Wednesday... 🚙

I'm sure they put built on Wednesday right on the sticker

Pretty much. It's not too hard to figure it out since you've got the date, and there's online calcs that you can plug in any date and it'll tell you what day of the week it was.

It's not a myth. Research has been done, this is what was found:
Mondays everybody's hung over from the weekend and gotta get back in a work rhythm.
Wednesday everybody has had a couple days to get into the swing of things.
Friday everybody's slacking off, socialising with other workers, planning day-dreaming the coming weekend's debauch, counting the minutes til the whistle blows...

Wednesday-built cars tend to have fewer faults & last longer.
