What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Even though I have tons of PCBs that I haven’t ordered parts or come up with graphic designs for, I’m currently designing graphics for a DeadEnd FX Ludwig Phase II pedal. Why? Because I had an idea and now I’m fixated on it.

Also I’m still waiting on Tayda to stock the BB2 and XX in the new colors.

that’s up there with self defacating humor and telling people the 1 insult contest they’re never winning is the 1 about yourself with you, not like they put up with you as long as you have ;) :ROFLMAO:

trying to build the ambition to either get a dowel to redrill the tuner holes on the shart caster or just jumping straight to making new parts to be a southpaw, currently a righty build because my left pinky’s been shot since I was 16….

Trying to get an instrumental outfit going and "Deep Deep Down" is one of the tunes we'll be covering. The more Morricone, the better!

Right now we're working on arranging "Carter Takes the Train". Not much in the way of effects for my bass part, maybe a doubler and octave down, but the guitarists will get to run wild with whatever effects they want on this Roy Budd classic.

Great song and Get Carter is probably my favorite movie poster.

I like the way you fixate, eh think.

I'm the same way, I just don't have the follow-through you have.

I didn't know Encyclopedia Brown was still a thing, it was my sister's favourite series of books when we were wee tykes, and she always solved the mysteries.

I didn’t know it was still a thing either. It’s just something that’s so ubiquitous that I think anyone knows it whether they’ve read it or not. It’s like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Jaws, or Star Wars… even if you’ve never seen/read them, you know the tropes because they’ve been referenced so many times. Or maybe the future is now, and I’m the old man.

It’s open source on GitHub if anyone wants to use it, or contribute. Still working on the schemas right now, and I’ve only populated the pedals in my current build list, but it’s usable if you can parse JSON.
I really need to give it a good look but from the quick glance earlier, looks good.

Got the terrarium populated. Because of the size of the mini toggles I used, it wound up racking the bottom row of pots when I tightened them up (I was too tired to notice beforehand. You can see that once they were tightened all of the shafts started leaning forward around 5-10°) so they don’t turn anymore. I’ll have to take all the pots off the board and order some solder lug pots to wire up with resistor leads instead. That’s what I get for hastily putting something together after an extremely long day.

With PCBs I try not to really tighten the pot nuts. It will only end in tears. On amps or Vero pedals it is important to make sure the pots are nice and tight to the chassis/enclosure, but on a PCB pedal just tight enough not to come undone is fine. It stops twisting and potential PCB stress. I'm generally stressed enough. I don't need to pass it on to my PCBs.

And at the risk of sounding like a parent - I don't build stuff when I'm tired. I will make mistakes! When I'm tired I always want to rush and I know that for me rushing is not good.

As far as my workbench is concerned - well right now I'm waiting for some transistors to arrive from Mouser so I can try to figure out what's going on inside the Animals Pedals Diamond Peak OD. It's closely related to the Skreddy Hybrid Overdrive because it's also designed by Skreddy but this time it's all silicon.

What I am hoping to end up with is a Diamond peak with a bass pot. As it is, there is probably just about the right amount of low end for a 3-knob pedal, but I think all ODs should have a bass pot. I have already made myself a Hybrid OD with a Bass pot (with Chuck's help) and it sounds wonderful, and it really helps because the Hybrid OD was a little light on for bass.

The Diamond Peak is a really good OD. It does that clean-to-dirty thing incredible well. With gain at around 9.00 I can get beautiful clean sparkly sounds with a light pick attack and then it gets nice and fat and biting if I dig in harder. Lovely fat trebles, too.

So if I can get a bass pot working on it I think I'll end up with a great sounding all-round OD pedal. It's excellent as it is! Screen Shot 2022-09-01 at 10.02.56 am.png

Yup, finger-tight is my general rule, but I guess I cranked down without even noticing. It was 9pm and I had been up since 7, and had been working on school work or in classes from 8 to 8, so I should have known not to push my luck. I’m usually so absurdly careful with everything I do, but I guess the one time I got careless it but me. Better an accident like that than with the table saw though— I was either going to get the terrarium done tonight and rip some boards in the morning or vice versa. A few busted pots is preferable over potential permanent injury.

I couldn't agree more! I make sure that I'm well awake before bringing out the table-saw, and mine is a saw-stop. Routing scares me even more.

I've had the tablesaw for just under a year now and it has been life-changing.

I’m dying to get a sawstop. I’d love to have a big ol’ cabinet saw and a big outfeed table so ripping plywood down could be easier, but I just have a portable worksite saw with a maximum 30” rip capacity. Ripping a full sheet of ply is a two person job and requires a ton of careful planning of outfeed stands

🙄 I’ve shook hands with my bandsaw and only gotten a scratch on my thumb…

Getting further on the shartcaster, halfway through work realized I don’t have the drill bit for that size bushing🤦‍♂️

krieg among others makes a saw attachment that guides a hand held circular saw good for up to like 24in/60 cm, just been to lazy to get 1. that’s width of finished board, as long as the piece of ply

ive got one of those. Pretty decent, but a lot less precise than a table saw and honestly a bit of a pain to set up. Definitely an invaluable tool in my collection though.

ESP EC1000 goes back on to the work bench as after plugging it in I realized I have wired literally all of the pots wrong. I swear to god I don’t know why I ever open a guitar up. Making a couple hundred pedals has made me somehow think I should know how to wire 3 pots together. Luckily it's just with the EMG solderless kit and I think I just switched the wiring at one point, but still I always get so frustrated doing guitar wiring

I'm replacing pots and pickups on my telecaster. I tried to measure my existing volume pot and it was reading 3k??

I'm not sure if I just couldn't get a good read or what. Would my guitar even function if that was the true reading? Tone pot measured at about 270k
