What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Thanks, man. I’ll send you the file if you want- no problem.
That would be great, promise not to use it for evil! My email is [email protected]

Just noticed your sig—MY favorite band of all time. Why i bought my ‘69. Had this since mid/late 90’s after seeing them for the third time on the Everything sucks tour/festival/tour

Awesome! I’ll send it your way!

I got to see them on that same tour and keep trying to catch them on a Festival sometime. Bill and Stephan played with Keith Morris and Greg Ginn with FLAG a few years ago. That was awesome- all the old Black Flag songs before Rollins came around.

Got some too ))

I recently got a box of old project boxes with a couple of cool console enclosures and tons of smaller plastic ones from my work:

The beige/tan ones are LMB Heeger Modular Desktop Consoles, which feel much bigger in person. The small black & blue boxes in the back are plastic Hammond 1591L & 1591BK enclosures for scale.

The two smaller ones are 8" x 6" x 2.75" and the big one is 13" x 10" x 4".

I think I'll put a Spaceman Orion Spring Reverb (DeadEndFX Hooke) in one of the smaller consoles, but I'm going to have to think long & hard about what to do with the big one. Might be perfect for a pro audio/500-series or synth build.
Shouldn't these be in the "what's in the mailbox?" thread? 😸

I just got a bunch of similar enclosures out of my storage unit, gonna see if they'll all fit in my suitcase and take them back to the GWN.

Can’t tell if they make them anymore.
They need a copy editor ... two typos in one para isn't great but when one of them is for your Co's own product name:

"SMOKEY® AMPS ALLOW YOU TO CARRY A KILLER AMP IN YOUR POCKET OR BRIEFCASE. KEEP ONE IN THE GLOVE BOX OF YOUR CAR OR IIN YOUR DESK DRAWER. YOU'RE NEVER FAR TO GET THAT SOUND OUT OF YOUR HEAD WITH A SHOKEY® AMP."

🤓

Maybe need a better ad-copy writer, too. 📝🥸

Started working on a Bassman picked up.

Reworking old amps is SO rewarding when you get to bring them back to life. It isn't always easy but then again sometimes it's just following the standard workflow of replacing old out of spec parts and then dialing it back into spec. I always enjoyed going thru it step by step and watching the thing light up and sound like it was designed to sound like. Better yet, having the owner bring it in like they'd just lost a favorite pet and watching them light up when you fire it up for that first test drive.

I got into a groove for a while with Marshalls that had blown trannies and did either Mercury's or (better yet) Magnetic Components (while they were still around). Guys that dealt with trannies dying a slow death were unaware how good their amps sound originally.

More MKI musings. This is what I understand right now:
  • Q1 hFE 68 leakage 73. More leakage introduces artifacts. A lot of leakage, say >200 is super noisy
  • Q2 hFE 117 leakage 43 - This is where gain is generated but all it needs is around 100, it sounds the same above that. Low leakage is good, the transistor is biased by the Attack pot anyway
  • Q3 hFE 189 leakage 48 - Q3c is around -8.7V. Very loud, powerful, lots of sustain but artifacts in the decay and single notes. I tried hFE 60 and leakage 150 and it cleaned up the artifacts really well, however 60 is just not enough gain. Ideally gain should be >100 and leakage around 150 to bring the collector down to -8-8.5V. Lowering the voltage by increasing the 15k makes the circuit sound dark and quiet. I don;t have he right transistor!
This circuit is exhausting. I could build it as it is but I'd like it tot sound a bit cleaner.

I have all the components laid out to populate 2 Crown Jewels. One painted enclosure with dry blend and the other is a stock one with bare enclosure I have had sitting around for a year. Figure I'll knock them both out at the same time. Interesting that the CJ v1.1 uses a dual C100k for Mid Frequency, but v1.2 uses a B100K. I think using a C taper was an odd choice. Guess I'll see when I get them tested.

Really liking your set up here.

Nobody said we could use Legos in our builds! Im in! ;) 🤘
