What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

This is a cool commission that I wasn't going to show until it was finished, but I figured I'd share the beginning of this Big Muff for Blake. It's a WIP, so it may change a bit. I'll probably squeeae my favorite lyrics on there somewhere.

Curvy traces and teardrops always make the traces look intentionally groovy

I really need to switch to KiCad, still using eagle, these circuits are dope!

You can easily draw curved traces in Eagle.

In my opinion third one is the best for the task (it's called wire bend style 7),

Btw - there's also ulp called teardrops. But I prefer Kicad for this. From what I remember there's no (easy) undo for the teardrops in Eagle.
You can also google third party teardrop ulp's.

Might have went a little crazy on this one.

MEANWHILE, back at the local sewage-treatment plant, things were getting backed up...

I don't have the skills to photoshop in the treatment-plant workers.

Seriously nice wiring!

A Hydra, or it would be, if I had read the build doc well enough earlier to realize that it calls for smaller 1uF caps (I'm going to order some tantalums and MLCC's both just in case). The resistors I could fit in 1/4w just fine, but the caps would be a nightmare with 1uF film box types, so will have to order more stuff.

On the other hand that means I'll have to whip up some more box designs so I can order those at the same time from Tayda. Plus it will take a while until they ship. Oh well, I still have the GCI Apostle kit to build too, I guess I'll start on that instead.

Building a Skreddy Screwdriver and didn't have a AC127. Threw a hail mary waaaay deep to an NTE103A, off Amazon, of all places. Worked a charm. Never played one of these before and it went from being a random build, to a staple on my board. Love this circuit!

Bittersweet moment. About to ship out my last Rock Mania pedal ever. It has been a very special, long term project, but it's also drained me. It's just so damn hard to put it all together! Much of this is my own fault, for squeezing maybe 4 or 5 normal pedals' worth of stuff (and a battery!) into a 1590B. What was I thinking? I swear, I almost get PTSD just thinking about building another one.

I'll go back to my usual onboard gadgets now. No more pedals for me for the next 20 years.

Except for this one-off Bass Rockman rehouse I feel compelled to complete.

Oh, here we go again...

No kidding, those Rock Mania PCBs look **dense**!!!

The Apostle is boxed up, drilling was fine except for the rotary switch hole which I forgot needs to be larger than a normal pot hole, but that was an easy fix.

Also a bit of a goof, the dual gang pots (which the Musikding kit did not include - it included single gang pots instead, but I did get a voucher for my troubles so it's fine) I ordered were accidentally linear and not logarithmic, so apparently the normal "noon" position for treble and bass is now somewhere around 20% of the rotation. I thought 50% is the same in both and just the rest of the taper was different (for whatever reason), but obviously I was way off mark.

It still works and sounds fine, but it's a bit noisy (just background hum - doesn't change if I touch anything so I don't think it's a grounding issue, but I'll double check that the input and output are making a good connection at some point) and also very loud and high gain (fun comparison to the Viceroy which I've been troubleshooting for a while which has way too little gain and volume). I'm pretty sure everything is correct, and I biased the JFET's at 17V (originally 16V but rebiased them to try and get more headroom and less gain) as they should be AFAIK. Maybe it's just a very high gain circuit? I feel like there's no reason to put gain and volume over noon, or at least if you include the boost knob in the equation.

It also has a switch between Orange and Matamp tone stacks, I don't know which one is which, but one seems to be more balanced with the edges rounded off. Both are interesting flavours.

Edit: Attached photo, featuring the God of War font @music6000 pointed out to me some time ago.

The toggle switch is sadly a bit skewed, I should see if I have a washer that could work there.

Last color for this batch. This will be the last enclosure with rivets in them as it will be updated to have the brackets incorporated into the enclosure. This will save me time in the future making these! The colors that I promised some people I will make more of, I will be doing in the new batch just waiting on more metal to come in!

I love the way these came out! I think this might be my favorite color I’ve done so far…
