What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

Haven’t been able to build much lately. However…Once in a while I get to work on pedals.

Today…

The Landergraft Hoverdrive that I built my friend. He kept the tone almost all the way down and wanted to change the sweep.
So the other night we gator-clipped in some other cap values in parallel with the stock tone cap (220n) and 470n in parallel seemed to hit the sweet spot at 690n. I don't have any 680n on hand so I was going to solder the 470n on to the 220n, but it was being a pain, so I pulled the 220n and am putting in the yellow 1µ in the pic.

Of course, the cap came out easy-peasy but left behind some solder that no amount of force from the solder-sucker nor brass-braid could take away — so I had to disassemble the pedal and use my little drill bit you see resting on the PCB. Taking it apart tweaked the 9mm pots pretty badly, so I'll be lucky if this thing works when I get it back together (if the tone-cap pads are okay and the 9mm pots weren't wrecked...

SO ... add to the "annoyance" thread fixing things that weren't really broken; modding things after they're finished.

Taking a break from it to post this.




While I'm at it... may as well catch up a little.

Way back last year or before I posted some pics of my friend's Truckustom. I wasn't able to help him much in recent months so I stopped posting pics even though I was still documenting the build.

Kustom curved back tailgate with frenched in '59 caddy tail-lights, kustom running boards, reshaped front fenders, doors converted to suicide.
Too many other subtle touches to list 'm all.
Still needs glass, final bodywork and a paint-job
(OH, and on the back — that's a soap-box version of the Bandit Trans-Am that his great grand-son raced last Saturday)

Repairing my wife's wire soap-cutter (she makes all our soap).
What's that got to do with our hobby? Well... look at that tensioner adjuster in the lower right of the pic. 😸
She bought the thing online, and if I'd known how it was constructed I could've made her one.
If it breaks again, I will make her one with spare guitar/bass bits.
I save all my old guitar strings for spare cutting-wire for her. Reduce Reuse Recycle.



Forgot to take a before-pic so my friend sent me the pic below-left.
About a month or two back I helped my friend swap out some electronics and a pickguard.
Guitar originally had the black guard, then he went to EMGs and white guard; we swapped it back to black:

Well, that sort of has me caught up. Hope to have more bench pics soon, pedal-related ones.

Breaks over, now to see if I can get that 1µ cap in place without wrecking the whole build.

Just got back from walking the dog, so I've not tackled it yet.

The plan is to leave some lead-length and then lay it over. Even without doing that It should be fine as I've got other 1µ already in on the component side. However, if the 1µ is too much, having some extra lead-length will make taking the 1µ out easier when the 680n come in (but I'm hoping 1µ will suffice).

I'm totally happy with the build, otherwise, because my friend loves it and gigs with it. He even started putting the SHO boost I built for him in front of it. That's what makes all the hassles worthwhile — it's being preferred by my friend to his host of commercially-built ODs. Well, I should say in addition to the commercial stuff.

I find it even more satisfying when a friend likes a build than me liking it.

I feel you on that one.
It's kinda like cooking an amazing meal for friends. It's an unnecessary expensive hassle but so rewarding when you knock it out.

Repurposing a failed Tayda UV print. Had to fix up the sides a bit with a white marker. Also need to spray clear coat tomorrow on it. Planning to build a Barbarian Fuzz from Dirtbox Layouts for it.

Acrylic?
I've done some paint pouting with the kids. Wondered how thick acrylic would hold up on a pedal. Thought about trying enamel with flood thinner added...
