What’s on *YOUR* workbench?

I would recap the power section but we are meeting up to see Pallbearer at The Caverns in a few and don't have time. It runs on Boss power so they're probably fine. All the other electros are solid Als.

Does it use the Jalco jacks that everything else uses? I have a pile from parts carcasses if you need some

Hard drives are like tires: they're rated for a certain number of rotations; after that, the likelihood of failure goes up exponentially.

Still sucks when it happens!

Sometimes the toner doesn’t adhere to the aluminum perfectly and some of it flakes off. Usually around the edges. Also a few where I screwed up the alignment.

There will be more rejects at the acid etch step. Can’t rework those though. Just scrap at that point.

Might be worth a test: I've had great luck using black grill paint on copper clad then laser etching off the paint for ferric chloride etching. Haven't tried (muriatic?) acid so no idea how it would react in it. Nice thing about that kind of paint is it dries to the touch rather quickly.

edit: now that I'm thinking about it, jwin suggested in a PM that the paint may be conductive (had some rando continuity issues with boards where I left the paint on as "solder mask")... metal contents? So that may not work. womp.

Close to them but not quite. The collars flush mount and the jack pins are split pin snap ins.
I just drilled a new hole and put a enclosed solder kit mono jack in. That gets 90% of the use and if it fails again it will take 2 minutes to fix. I tried to rob the footswitch one but there's a soldered in metal guard that holds the output side of the jacks down so I was going to have to desolder 8 snap ins and 6ish more points just to swap jacks. Figured that guard was going to be a PITA acting as a heat sink and just improvised.
Edit to add: we don't see each other often and that board just happened to show up a couple hours before he was coming over to go to the ahow. Getting it done was more important than going it pretty...
That thing is beat to hell and been through a house fire. It's not collectors item.

Conductivity wouldn’t be a problem for what I’m doing, but I don’t have a laser. I imagine paint could get me a more reliable etch, but that process sounds like it might be even slower than what I’m doing now.
 
Ok so somewhat a failure and somewhat a win!


So the core is working as it should but I’m not getting the detail I want. I think it’s still usable but not the professional look I’m looking for. I think using finer mesh sand will fix that.
The enclosure itself should have a lip all the way around but ended up grinding it down because it didn’t come out as crisp as I wanted it to. Regardless I’m going to try to build into this one but I think I’m getting close to a usable enclosure!

That’s looking great! I could even make an argument for a rougher finish! To me the selling point of what you’re doing is the fact that it’s an artisanal hand made small batch sand cast enclosure. Nothing wrong with it looking like what it is.

When Lollar did that run of sand cast enclosures they really leaned on that marketing angle, and the I think the finish on those enclosures is purposefully rough and it looks great.

Yeah I think you’re right! I would like to give it one more try to see if I can better detail on the inside. I think it’s totally usable as is lol
