Might be worth a test: I've had great luck using black grill paint on copper clad then laser etching off the paint for ferric chloride etching. Haven't tried (muriatic?) acid so no idea how it would react in it. Nice thing about that kind of paint is it dries to the touch rather quickly.
edit: now that I'm thinking about it, jwin suggested in a PM that the paint may be conductive (had some rando continuity issues with boards where I left the paint on as "solder mask")... metal contents? So that may not work. womp.
