What Pedalpcb circuits that are RAT based and what's your favorite?

I'm probably opening a huge can of worms here by asking about the favorite, however I've never really owned a rat pedal of any kind. I'm sure some would think that is a sin. Not sure why I've never owned one I really do like the way they sound. I guess all the bands I've been in I just didn't really have too much of a need for one beyond what I was already using. Either way I would love to hear some opinions. I have a friend who wants me to surprise him with an interesting rat-based circuit.

I would probably do the muroida and if you want to get fancy with it you could add some clipping options on a toggle. My favorites are both LEDs or 1 LED and 1 5817. I haven’t built the Frajaeley but I imagine I would like it I would probably change D1 to a 5817 and I think some people have recommended adding a resistor in the feedback loop of the clean blend op amp.

I don't think I've actually owned any stock RAT's, but I do have a Life Pedal clone (built by someone on Etsy) and a 1981 DRV that I built myself. Not a fan of either one.

My favourite is definitely the Rat Salad, but I'm not sure if there are any boards available, I don't know if @steviejr92 stocks them or if it was a one time thing.

I'm planning to build the Pandora’s Box at some point, which might count? Or I'm not sure if it does.

I picked up a JHS Series 3 Distortion as I was curious about the RAT only to discover I really like them!

I’ve got some OP07 op amps and I’m planning on breadboarding a basic RAT with symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping on a switch and combining it with the boost side of the Angry Andy Plus (JHS AT+)

I can’t think where I got that idea from…

To be fair, I think JAM pedals have done something more than just use a boost based on a Tube Screamer. It looks like asymmetric clipping, and two op amps (TL072). I had the opportunity to play this one of my mates, for me the boost at full was way too much, so we took it right down. Anyway I think it was a nice addition, so a bit of a fun Christmas breadboarding project to get something that does a similar job.

The Rat distortion is a small circuit, which makes it suited for vero or perfboard builds.
There are few components, so it's easy to make the connections between parts without a pcb.

As a diy builder, vero and perfboard projects are the most satisfaying because we are really doing everything, it really fits the hand-crafting aspect of diy.

I think it also looks better in an enclosure, a vero/perfboard gives a pleasant feeling of a meticulous and neat handwork. Pcb are bland in comparison (except for a few very beautitul pcbs, like Aion's Lithium).

There are a few popular and interesting mods for the Rat, like the Turbo switch, a bass control or a bass toggle, the Retz mod lowering the gain with a toggleswitch, etc.
They all are quite simple and easy to implement, so any Rat circuit with 2 or 3 of these mods will be more than enough to get an interesting distortion and fully explore the Rat's nest.

Parenthese is a nice project, but the famous mods aren't included, and it's also a big enclosure taking lots of space for a little Rat, which could fit in the smallest enclosures.
Parenthese features an extra volume boost located after the Rat circuit, and an octave up. In my experience, these extra features won't be often needed, especialy compared to the other popular mods.

Unless you really want an octave up and a post-distortion volume booster with your Rat, the Parenthese isn't a good choice.

About Rat variants, i never tried any, but i've always been curious about Catalinbread Katzenkonig, a ToneBender and Rat hybrid.

I would also like to try a bixonic Expandora circuit. I've often heard good things about it.

Blower Box is neat-looking

Or…

DIY
You could build a stock Rat, but add a bax or BMT EQ section on a separate stomper to switch between the stock FILTER and the added EQ for a two-channel type jobbie — use a 4PDT and you could mess with the gain, too, at the same time so it’s not just an EQ swap….

It’s worth trying. I don’t usually think to use it, but when I do, I always enjoy it.

In nasally voice: Will the defense for The Parentheses please rise…

The Parentheses is the most popular distortion in the PPCB catalog, followed by the Rat. And for good reason- the octave up and boost rule. It’s also on-topic, because this is a thread about favorite Rat-based PPCB projects.

I did the green ringer and rat into a pushed amp 25 years ago, and it’s still a part of my core sound. When I discovered the Life pedal, it was validation that this is widely regarded as a badass tone.

It’s fine to not like it obviously. But I would say it’s incorrect to claim that the octave/boost is not often needed. It depends on what you’re doing. Furthermore, it actually does include famous/popular clipping mods: Turbo, Dirty, Op-Amp clipping, Asymmetrical.

For those that haven’t tried it and like the idea of The Parentheses or dig demos, I highly recommend it. There’s also the Parentheses Mini if the 1590XX is too much real estate, sacrificing the octave switch.

The defense rests.

i admit that i totally forgot the rotary switch, good point.

...and the octave up sound on my build is quite disturbing, but maybe it needs some calibration.

I wonder if there's a way to modify the octave up sound ? Form some sort of sinusoidal with the octave up ? Maybe using a trimmer somewhere to find the correct resistor value ? And using a keyboard instead of a guitar to hear it more precisely ?

Is this the new version with the discrete LM308 substitute?
It is!

I wish I’d had my Series 3 Distortion at the time to do a comparison, but it’s very RAT sounding, I just couldn’t say if it was exactly a RAT or just a very nice but different flavour! The boost was nice once it was taken down from it’s default maximum! But I feel a TS in front of a RAT would probably get you close.

I’d love to see what they actually did, I suspect my assumptions are wildly wrong!

Did you match the components of that section?
Ringers always seem to behave better, ime, when you match everything.
