What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

I recently noticed that Grover had revamped their 18:1 505 tuners last year to now be an official drop-in replacement for old 14:1 mini-Rotomatics, before that they required new screw holes a mere 1.5mm from the old ones - ughh!. So I can finally go full blackout mode for my old Heritage electric now, and hopefully work out the last kinks in my long rehab project on this guitar.

I have a DEFX Reflektor kit coming in the mail, because I am a masochist.
Limited Quantities grrrr... get behind me Satan Nostradoomus!

I've always wanted to use one of those mini-toroidals in one of my own designs, but I'm still not at the point of such capability let alone culpability... The Reflektor would fill my jonesing for the toroidal-doohickie nicely in the interim.

What are you planning on doing with all the AC187s? In my experience they’ve all been insanely leaky (1-2mA), but good fits for Tone Bender Mk. III-type circuits when paired with the right diode.
Plans? We don't need plans where we're going.
Jk.
A lot are pretty garbage, as it goes with non germanium. I sorted though a little over half the other night and found ~30% to be under 250uA with usable betas. ~50% were <1mA. I just don't have a ton of European germs outside some 127s (compared to a lot of US germanium and a decent stash of Rusky) and hit on some auctions.

lots of good stuff in the mail today. Thunderdome amplifier pcb and faceplates from Inverted Cross Audio. Also their Fuzz-H (hyper fuzz) and Dronemuff PCBs and faceplates. The Dronemuff was a freebie because they had to wait a week before shipping. These things look fuggin sweet! Also got some kickass PCBs and faceplates from Other* Pedals. And I caught the mailman just in time to sign for the package. Today was a good day. IMG_1571.jpeg IMG_1570.jpeg

While I wait for my Model T transformer set, I got to thinking that I don’t really want to build any more full amps after the T (but never say never), and that’ll I’ll add some simple functionality to have the Model T play well with external preamps.

I ordered the hardware for three mini head format preamps. I’m going to make SLO, Wizard Modern Classic II, and VH4 channel 3+4 preamps.

The is my first go with toroidal transformers. The transformer fits inside the chassis, but it’s very snug. Is that risky business? I know you don’t want to short the top of the mounting bolt to the chassis but I couldn’t find much about the sides.

It has rubber isolators for top-bottom so that makes me think it’s a bad idea. I can mount it on top but I was thinking transformer inside and tubes on the rear for a smaller footprint.

holy crap. that amp pcb kit is sick.
just had a squizz of the schematic - looks like that lead channel is basically a 5150 red channel.
- made for 100W JCM800 PT + OT
- 2x KT88 for 90W.
fuck. what a package.

@Hal Harvey not an amp guy but a bit of input
Due to the way toroids work, not sure havinb equal metal on both sides that close would be good. May get some induction/emi. Also. If you're not overspecing then, heat may become an issue, at least over time.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was browsing pics of different builds using them and it seems like they were either top mounted or had plentiful space in side the chassis.

They are overspec’d.

Oh well, more space to work with inside the chassis.

Ohh cool, I didn't know about Inverted Cross Audio. Looks like very affordable pedals, and a lot of them have PCB's available, very cool!

The 909 sounds interesting. A tubescreamer with clipping options, clean blend and an included octave? Now that's something I don't think I've seen before. Might pick up that and the BLO(ODB)ATH PCB's. The EQ looks nice too, but I don't have any need for an EQ pedal, really.

Maybe the Lowrider RAT too, high pass control on the gain side, and a low pass control + clean blend, sounds like a bass RAT? Might work for guitar too.

If I didn't already have the Sasquatch PCB I might pick up the Dolmen (Muff with octave).

In January this year, @comradehoser announced that he wanted to give away an Aion L5 legacy board. Since I was already building the newer L5 clean version (build report here), I thought this offer too good to pass by. I remembered that one of our most respected local guitarists (John Fourie, no less) had demoed these amps along with the then new range of Gibson guitars and basses (Grabber, and so on) in the 1980s and the Moog design piqued my interest big time.

We both waited for confirmation from my local post office which took a very long time and necessitated visits to the local mail centre to try to determine where the package had ended up. The stock response was apologetic but 'not much we can do without a tracking number.'

Fast forward to a couple of days ago and a delivery confirmation notice from the PO arrived in the mailbox. I wasted no time heading there and lo and behold, there it was intact and splendidly packed in bubble wrap, together with some nice postcards and bay leaves all the way from the US of A.

So that's more or less three or so months' waiting time but in a strange twist of karma, when I asked the post person what was owing he grinned and said 'No duty on this.' Perhaps he had grown weary of my inquiries every time I went in to collect something else or the customs wheel of fortune tilted in my favour for no apparent reason. This matters insofar as it's often a complete lottery as to customs duties, which seem completely arbitrary and can be significant depending on extraneous factors (prevailing winds, air temperature, and other random factors beyond my ken).

And the board itself.

I wanted to acknowledge the kindness and generosity of @comradehoser in making all this possible. Thanks so much, my friend.

This forum (not to mention the collective wisdom of all concerned) has been a godsend to me over the last few years and I have learned so much from you all. Thanks for reading as ever, but please excuse me: I need to go build something right away.

And yes, I miss the person formerly known as fig too.

Best to all.
