What's in the mailbox? 📬 📦

More tubes from the past couple weeks! Just can’t pass up good deals when I find them. First is a very old long plate Toshiba with a getter unlike any I’ve seen, 2 ANOS smooth plate Telefunken. They test NOS but I’m gonna call them ANOS since the labels have faded. A ‘54 black plate CBS and a Webcor branded CBS 7025. Gotta love those CBS tubes. And lastly a GE branded Mullard I63 IMG_1963.jpeg

The smaller board is the Double Dirty Shirley, with 2 gains and 2 master volumes. I had grabbed a JTM45 power transformer in BYOC's going-out-of-business sale, and it doesn't fit on a Mojo or AES chassis, so I figured why not build something cool instead of classic. The other board is for a Friedman Mini clone, which, I'm thinking a Jerry Cantrell mini, when I get around to it, I really just added it to justify the shipping cost.

So the pile grows LOL. In fact I was just agonizing over this GT120 PCB from Hilbish (it's on sale!). I saw Windhand over the weekend and was blown away, almost literally, by Garrett Morris's tone out of that thing. But I'm gonna try a pedal emulation first.

The parts accumulation phase is in full swing, helped by the 10% off JJ tubes at AES. I'll be bugging you with minor questions on the Deliverance build pretty soon 🙃

I missed the last few sales on GT120 (Hilbish out of stock or me out of money);
Quick question, SVP: is the Hilbish PCB based on the Master or non-master — which I guess depends on which I want it to be, but obviously don't even know if there's a circuit-difference between the two.

I know a bit about that.

The Hilbish is not MV - true to the original design. The later MV designs sound different - even with the MV maxed, there's some videos on Youtube. Here's an example of the 120 design with a MV:

This came the other day. Manual pot is fucked, but works. Not sure if I should bother contacting the seller about it since it was a good deal anyway.

Warmoth had a garage sale this morning of super discounted necks. $100 plus shipping got me three necks:

- a Precision neck with black blocks and stainless frets. Exactly the specs I’ve been wanting to order a neck with for the past few years, minus binding (but for $30 I couldn’t really expect ALL of the specs I wanted). Discounted because of some black sawdust caught in the wood grain. I bet I can get it out though before I finish it.

- a solid ziricote strat neck. Discounted because the dot inlays are ever so slightly off center.
View attachment 102049
- roasted maple Strat neck with ebony board and stainless frets. Discounted because of the slight tapering error visible right around the 9th fret on the treble side of the board.
How does one learn about these awesome sales?!? Was it in person or online?

Allegedly I am getting a package via DHL today from Tayda. First time using DHL, people seem to say good things although the tracking is a little wonky. That said, I have faith it will be here between 13:30 and 15:30 as text said it would be.

Are you using the hanger module power bus? I’ve done a bunch of ICEpower based builds and always just used the low voltage bipolar aux section, which worked great for my purposes. But IIRC some of the lower power and/or older ICE modules have a fairly modest aux out section. I’ve been thinking about throwing a 100 or 200 watter in my DIY acoustic guitar cab, maybe one of these days…
I am not yet sure what the best approach is going to be. Still building the cabinet, while letting the electronic side of the project cook slowly in my mind.

On the site I bought it from it said that the hanger rail was usually used to power the pre-amp people installed alongside these for custom hifi amps and such. So it made sense to to me to let it power the whole front-end of this guitar/bass amp. Especially since I got two units that should provice enough juice together.

Goodie boxes from Mouser, AES, Antek, and LMS came the last couple of days.

Some colored power switches, stealth chickens, and metal brutalists:

Some more steel Hammond enclosures... I only have current plans for 3 of these but the price dropped over $5 each for 5. Anything worth doing is worth over doing right?

A couple of toroidal transformers and some horizontal mounting plates. I am not sure why I ordered two, I only needed one. Late night thought processes. I am sure I'll figure out something to use it for.

Anytime anyone mentions AES I'm obligated to let them know that if you have anything vaguely resembling a business for amps/pedals/guitars/etc., you can apply for an account with CE Distribution, the wholesale arm of AES. They have the exact same inventory but everything is at least 10% cheaper. There is a $50 minimum order requirement for CE, but it's not hard to meet that when you're building amps. They've tightened their requirements since I first signed up, but still not bad if you've been doing this for a bit.

In order to activate your CE web account, we need to see some type of documentation to show that you would be purchasing our products for business purposes rather than personal consumption. Please note, in order to be approved, you must provide a verifiable business website or applicable social media account. If one is not available, a verified commercial address can be used.

Please provide two or more of the following for your electronics related business:
  • Federal EIN number
  • State-issued tax ID number or Reseller Permit
  • State Issued Sales Tax Exemption Form (Required to be tax exempt)
  • Business Registration Form
  • Link to the website of the applying business or social media showing recent projects
  • Verifiable commercial business address
