And "Sterling Vermin" sounds too much like Mitt Romney's joke nickname, "Stormin' Mormon"...
Issue with the design in that link is it has the differential amp, the gain stage but is missing a cathode follower stage to provide output drive so it's going to be very susceptible to the following load variation in changing the sound.
Or you could make a full tube opamp - with the four triode sections, you have a differential amp, gain stage and cathode follower driver in two tube. It even works with low gain tubes like the 12au7 and 12bh7a at 12V on the plate:
Reference the gain grid into the 12V rather than ground with a variable resistor to control the gain.
Add diodes as you will.. add $300 for having tubes = profit.
Almost every unobtainium component pedal can be simulated it just takes a long time to do, either via analogue or digital.
