Hi friends,
To my ear, EVH’s tone on Van Halen 1 always made the phaser sound more like a treble booster.
Here is an isolated guitar version of I’m the One (start at about 1:20):
It’s a super trebly, snarly, almost wah pedal toe almost all the way down sound.
It sounds to me like the sweep of his phaser is in a very narrow, trebly, snarly range.
My XC phase reaches this trebly, compressed wonderland at the height of its sweep.
What I want is for that trebly wonderland to be the middle or even the trough of the sweep, so that I am always in that sweet sweet trebly zone.
Also, yes, I know that EVH would sound like EVH on any guitar through any amp, but I’m just some idiot trying to mod my pedal.
