-Wiring in not that hard, lots of people just refuse to get better at it because it's not a UV print
Holy crap, the "work" I've seen in some BOUTIQUE pedals is sometimes shocking.
-EHX has only made a few really GOOD pedals, most are terrible and mid at best
This one shouldn't even be controversial, EHX is mostly known for a handful of original pedals that have been cloned and modded ad nauseum, whacky shit that ranges from fun to terrible and basically flat-out clones that also range from pretty good to "should have just gotten the Chinese clone for half the price".
-Some of your favorite pedals are quite possibly based on a Boss pedal that you openly admit to hating
Boss pedals are full of awesome ideas, just sometimes Boss is doing more "engineering" than making stuff sound actually good and sometimes putting some extra features or making minor adjustments can make a Boss circuit go from "it's alright" or "meh" to "this is a really cool pedal!" (which is possibly while people who dislike the CE-2 also have a hard-on for Julia... and also because guitarists are suckers for marketing and pretty graphics).
-Not every pedal needs a tube in it
Arguably NO pedal NEEDS a tube in it.
-Amps are the most important piece of gear in your signal chain
Yes, but also speakers, but also depends.
-The future of pedals is digital, the limits of analog have pretty much been reached
Agree to disagree here. Digital has been the future since like 20-30 years ago and still people will get tube amps with 5 fuzzes, 3 YATSes, a Univibe clone and a 400$ analog delay instead of a Line 6 Helix because there are still things that digital gear can't quite match and I'd argue that's not even corksniffing.
-The diy pedal hobby feels stagnant
It IS stagnant because 99% of pedals that get traced are Fuzz/OD/Distortion, of which like 80% are basically the same 10 or so circuits with minor modifications or maybe not even that. So many times I check the build docs of some obscure boutique pedal here on PPCB only to discover that something is just yet another TS, Muff, Timmy, Fuzz Face, Rat, Crunchbox, Zendrive... Not telling the boutique brands to "go and clone something else for a change" because that also doesn't lead to anything more interesting, but there's plenty of room to explore in the realm of less popular pedals. And even then, of course just painting by the numbers will get stagnant. If you want to do more, go ahead and design some circuits, even if it is just mashing gain stage of pedal A together with gain stage of pedal B. Maybe it's cool, maybe it isn't. There's also plenty of lesser known DIY community circuits to mess around with.
