NGD-there's no place like home

A little backstory. I was a big Gibson fanboy for years. They were the majority of my sound and what I played. The fenders creeped back in slowly around 2010. I loved them so much I named my dog Gibson after the guitars I loved so much. This was my collection in early 2015.

Gibson was everything to me he was more than a dog, he was my best friend and he rescued me as much as I rescued him and when he got sick and passed away from cancer in 2019 it devastated me and my world fell into darkness. I was so bitter and resentful that I couldn't stand to look at or play the guitars that he was named after and I found reasons to sell them. I still miss him dearly, but I'm in a different place with it now and while it still hurts some days, I look back fondly of my time with him and am ready to move forward and honor him once again.

Recently I did some soul searching musically and decided to do a big shake up with my gear. I had stuff I wasn't using, either because my taste changed or my needs were no longer in alignment with certain gear. There was also a lot of overlap and redundancies so I put a lot of stuff on the chopping block. I made some Difficult decisions and in the end I turned a nice profit on things collecting dust. So I have a NGD. Here is my Gibson ES-335 with block inlays. Very resonant and alive acoustically. I really like the T top style pickups they have in these new models. Flawless fit and finish and plays like a dream. The sound is very balanced. Bright but not harsh and never boomy.

But since I still had money left in the pot and not being one to drive in the slow lane I bought another guitar. After all why not🤷 I probably won't be able to justify it in the coming years with getting a new car in a handful of years and the kids entering high school soon. I also don't feel I have any gaps left in my collection for what I play and what my needs are so I will be set for quite some time. My sweetwater engineer earned his money getting me this sweet les Paul standard 60s in unburst. At 9 pounds it's not to heavy and has that endless sustain that solid non weight relieved LPs are known for. I love the coloring of the burst and the top has just enough flame without being gaudy and treading into PRS territory. Another flawless example of how much Gibson has stepped up their game in recent years. The Burstbucker 61 pickups sound great and the pots are all over 500k when I measured them so I don't have to rewire it!

Feels good to be back in the flood again and it feels like home. If you are thinking of getting a new Gibson, don't hesitate to try one out as they are making some of the best guitars they have made in the 30 years I've been playing guitar, regardless of what our resident Gibson hater is always posting here on the forum 🤣

Nice choices! If I could pick out any two guitars it might be something similar. I also like that as a tribute.

I lost my dog Otis in January of 2023. I bought a guitar that week and really got back into playing while I was in the depths of that. Glad to hear you're on the other side of the worst of it.

Boston Terriers are VERY special dogs, we lost ours to similar circumstances about 8 years ago and it still hits me at times.

I hope that you enjoy your new guitars, they’re lovely and a fitting tribute to your pup.

Damn fine looking guitars. I'm jealous. With my recent condo transition I've unloaded a ton of my stuff and reinvested in a spectacular Larrivee acoustic.
Very cool Gordy, I would love to see it. I'm down to one acoustic, my Martin

sorry for your loss, hoping its better today thru the music you're playing

Bostons are indeed VERY special. I wasn't ready emotionally to jump back in the fire when we got our second Boston but he was 4 months old when we rescued him from a puppy mill and he needed us as much as we needed him at that point. He's like Gibson reincarnated, so much so that it's scary sometimes.

Beautiful dog. The guitars are cool too but I favor the furry Gibson in this story.

Thanks man, I've really tried to convince myself that Gibson knew we gave him the best life possible when we rescued him, and it's like he knew Marshall needed us now. Marshall living the dream🙏🙌

This thread is loaded with goodies. Congrats. Always wanted a Boston Terrier...maybe someday.
Thanks John, we rescue because I think a lot of people don't know what big personalities they have and will often just get rid of them. Loving and loyal family members is what you're rewarded with.
All around beautiful. Good to hear you’re on an upswing. 🍻
Appreciate it man🍻

I understand why people love their dogs so much but they're not for me. Gibsons are however! I have a great Strat and love my Gretch Duojet. I gigged for years with a Gretsch 6120. But nothing sounds as good as my ES-225. I have a 335 and a Les Paul too and they're not going anywhere.

I think you chose wisely. I'd much rather have a few great guitars than a dozen decent guitars. I see guys displaying their huge collections and don't really get it. If a guitar doesn't get frequent play around here I sell it. It could become somebody else's number one.

My whole goal as a home player who spends their time recording alone was to have a small collection of what I felt was essential to get my sound. Like you said, I'd rather have a handful of really great and inspiring guitars than a bunch of options that are just ok. When I wanna play something I say, this calls for a tele or a LP, grab it and go. Fewer options means I spend more time playing than fiddling around.
