Do you name your guitars and if so, what?

Nah. They were named when I bought em. It's like a tattoo... I never could figure out what i'd like to keep around for more than a few weeks so I never got one. I only named my kid because it was necessary.
Reminds me of when I asked this girl where her name came from, and she told me the general practictioner of their parents made it up when they paid him a visit. They hadn't figured out a good female name and the doc needed to put SOMETHING down. Goes alongside the story of one of my dad's brothers who went to the municipal office to register his son, forgot about the name he and his wife came up with, and made one up at the spot. 😅

I follow Bricksnbeatles naming system. Naming guitars is a bit like calling your motorcycle "her". I love my bike but it's an it. I guess the whole calling things by female names comes from sailors calling their ship "her". There were no other women around.

The other expression which I find a bit cringey is when players call the collection of guitars an arsenal. "I have another axe in my quiver" (which is rather mixing metaphors). Unless you're Keith Richards a guitar is not a weapon. Or at least I don't see it as one. You can make your own mind up as to whether my guitars are weapons only after you hear me play.

"He really got Gladys to hand out a thrashing tonight"
Once heard someone say they give ships female names because ships need constant maintainance, just like women...

I forget where I saw it but, the best dad joke ever is... the dad that had a boy on the way to the hospital and named him Carson.

I never thought of this until this question. And now I can't stop thinking about it. Would a female guitar player do this as well? Would a gay guitar player choose the name of its own gender? And is their some relation with the aging of guitars? Do we name our guitars with the used look? Relics? And how about fillers and botox?
Are those Lucilles Sisterwives? How many guitars are considered a harem?
And do we name the boxes we stomp on? Or just the always on's?

Some of my cars have had names, but were not named by me.

I'd like to name them; I've thought about naming my basses and guitars but, nothing's really stuck.

Well, apart from my 1932 AlCoA — I call it "The Deuce" even though it might be a '31.

I wanted to name one of my basses after Thelma Therry, who led her own band back in her day (1920s)

However, the correct bass worthy of her name hasn't been found by me, yet.

If it feels right to do so, then name it. It's just some extra fun with the hobby, like coming up with your own name for another of your YATS builds...

It probably comes down to how much one wants to bang their guitar. It really opens things up if you're naming an instrument that you only like as friends.

I did name a few cars: a Buick Vistacruiser station wagon I borrowed was "Murray" and an old T-bird I owned was "piece of sh*t". Only car I've ever owned that I was tempted to stuff a rag in the gas tank and light it...

are you a bass player, too?

I used to call my led paul ole roy, after the cheap wal mart brand dog food. It came from a random comment based on tbe number of dents dings etc the thing has from being my main guitar as a teenager. But i dont think ive called it that in 25 years.

I've always thought it was really cringey when guys would give their guitars women's names. This is Roberta, this is Evelyn, and this is Donna, etc etc. I could never really put my finger on why, but man it sounds so weird to me. Like you wouldn't be even a little embarassed if a woman was around and you introduced her to Donna the strat?? :poop:

I just say my mustang, my jazzmaster, or whatever. The only difference is my SGs because I have two. I have my brown SG and my red SG. Let me get my red one out, or I've been playing my brown SG a lot lately, etc.

I think having a title while kind of funny isn't as bad. I'd rather someone say, "this is my guitar, Thunderfoot," than "this is Patricia" lol.
