Do you name your guitars and if so, what?

When I was 12 I tried it. Didn’t stick with it for long.

The Les Paul is the LP
The main strat is the main strat
The blue strat is the hardtail
The Danelectro 6 string is the dano
The Danelectro 12 string is 12er
The hagstrom 8 string bass is the jangle bass

That’s as close as I get with nicknames

I've always called my Les Pauls Paula.

It's like when your dog dies and then you get a new one and tell the kids its the same dog, I stay calling my Les Pauls Paula, even though the original Paula is long gone.

My Strat is called The Black Strat.
Your sensed feminine qualities in that first one? Or was it just a name that popped up in your mind, and never went away?

I never name my guitars but they do usually end up with one-two syllable names that I use in my head that I wouldn’t say out loud. Didn’t realize I did this until this thread:
- my ltd ec is “Espey” for esp
- black strat is Gil
- red sg bass vi is Dev or Doomer
- ltd telecaster is some incomprehensible slurring together of LTD, close to “litted”
- regular bass vi’s are jag1 and jag2

I follow Bricksnbeatles naming system. Naming guitars is a bit like calling your motorcycle "her". I love my bike but it's an it. I guess the whole calling things by female names comes from sailors calling their ship "her". There were no other women around.

The other expression which I find a bit cringey is when players call the collection of guitars an arsenal. "I have another axe in my quiver" (which is rather mixing metaphors). Unless you're Keith Richards a guitar is not a weapon. Or at least I don't see it as one. You can make your own mind up as to whether my guitars are weapons only after you hear me play.

"He really got Gladys to hand out a thrashing tonight"
